You will find numerous opinions on that subject.

For mine, I drive them easy up and down through the rpm range for the first 500 miles and let them go through several heating and cooling cycles.
Then I change the oil and observe how much metal is in the oil and on the magnetic oil pan plugs I always use. If it does not appear excessive (It usually won't) I complete the oil change and drive it like I intend to after that. I will change the oil again and make the same observations at 1000 and 3000 miles, then just change it at regular 3-5000 mile intervals depending on how dirty the oil appears when I check it. I don't stick to any certain mileage for my oil changes because if I do a lot of short trips the oil will get dirty and contaminated faster than if I do long trips. So I go by how dirty the oil looks when I check the level. If it is coal, tar black, it gets changed.

you want the crank at 0* tdc on the compression stroke. you can tell if is compression stroke by holding your finger over the #1 spark plug hole. once your set, stab the distributor. you want the rotor pointing at the #1 spot on the cap, which is usually straight back. once u get it stabbed and pointing at 1 then just put the wires on, in firing order counter clockwose.

note. when i set tdc at crank. i dont set it to 0*. i set it at my base timing 10-14*
