Rims

I'm looking to paint my rims white. Right now they are chrome and the chrome is flaking off. What do I use to prep the rims for paint? Should I sand them down, etc?

Re: Rims

you can probably find a wheel refinishing shop and have them acid dip the wheels to remove the chrome, probably the best bet as you dont want to paint over that, it will just flake off. You may could sand it off yourself, but chrome has more than one layer generally and would be a ton of work.

Re: Rims

ive heard you can paint over chrome if its in good shape if you scuff it up and prep it good but never had first hand experience doing it, if its already flaking though it wont turn out good

Trojan Horse is just getting started.
Re: Rims

I've tried numerous methods from etching chemicals up to and including DA sanding to paint chrome. It just never works and if it was chipping to begin with, it is going to keep chipping ruining your paint job.
Removing it is the only real alternative for a good paint job and that can get expensive.
