What's your fuel pressure running at when it does this? Does it pop and crack while giving it throttle? What happens of you ease the throttle to wide open?

Are you using a fuel pressure gauge or just checking the valve? Not trying to make you sound dumb just trying to help

sounds like a possible ignition or timing issue. maybe unburnt fuel igniting when releasing throttle?

i would suspect coil, pip/hall sensor or timing.

the coil and hall sensor can be tested and you can check your timing with a light.

The pickup in the dist is actually pretty easy to change relatively speaking, I've done it once.

Well testing parts is free. Once you figure out the problem go to the boneyard if you need to.

Hall sensor test can be found in the useful mustang information sticky thread.

The hall sensor aka pip is in/on the distributor.

may just be in need of a good tune up.

fuel filter.

get some maf cleaner and throttle body cleaner and clean all the intake pieces and sensors. run some injector cleaner through it. make sure your plugs, wires, and cap, rotor button are in good shape. and clean out the egr.
