I know when owning a Mustang, especially a GT, gas milage is not always great if its your daily driver. My friend gets approximately 15-17 in town in hIS 87' GT. So with the flowmaster exhaust and cool air intake and msd ignition im guessing the 87' GT im buying should be similar. Are there any other things you can suggest to up gas mileage? Do any of the after market chips work on a car so old?
Driving habits have a lot to do with mileage for sure.
Keeping it tuned, oil & filter changed, and air filter clean will also help considerably. Synthetic oils in the engine, transmission and rear differential will also help.
My 86 GT is extensively modified with a T5 5-speed and 3.55 gears.
IF, I watch how I drive I can manage 24-26 MPG on the highway.
There are no "mileage" chips for these cars.
You will probably realize better mileage by changing it over to MAF as it is more adaptable and tunable than the speed density system.
My 92 gt/ 5 speed can get about 23 mpg on some tanks of gas. So far I have long tube headers, o/r x pipe, dump exhaust, cai, electric fan, and the removal of air pump/ emission equip. plus tune up( plugs, wires, filters...etc.). Also I removed all of the a/c equip. Im not bragin or anything just tellin ya thats whats working for me. Motors are just complex air pumps, remove as much air/exhaust restriction as possible and you will see the best results aka power/mpg.
Just some food for thought. This is in my escort, but same idea. Every payday I put the same exact amount of gas in my car. This little car revs at 3k when I get to about 67 mph. I know this cause that's about what I used to cruise at.The speed limit is 55 to get to work. I noticed that if I go exactly 55, it will keep my revs at 2500k or less. Just staying under 2500 will get me a whole extra day to work and back during a 5 day period I have tested this a few times since I have noticed. So unless I'm in a hurry I I have learned to drive accordingly.
