You'll also need a new pinion nut and a Chiltons manual to do it right. Otherwise you stand a good chance of destroying the rear end if you over tighten or under tighten the pinion nut.

i got a manual and im gonna pick up everything i need tomorrow, im guessing this problem came about because of my rear shifting a while ago? also i was leaking oil from the differential cover, and a little up near my tranny, its not tranny fluid though i think because its not a reddish color. would anything else inside my rear be damaged from the shifting? and how could i tell? i never had a rear apart before so im not sure what to look for.

oh and also is my driveshaft supposed to be able to turn back and fourth a little bit or is some bushings or something damaged?

when you take the cover off, if anything major is wrong you should be ble to tell by looking. look for metal flakes in the oil. and check wear on the gears if the teeth on the gears are getting round, sharp, or chipped then they ars damaged.

yes the driveshaft will move a "little bit" back and forth.

Alright. Any clue what the oil up near the tranny would be from?

If your car is a 5-speed it may use oil instead of fluid.
Or, what you are seeing could be a bit of oil out of the grease in the u-joint.
