Stuck fuel gauge?

So I just bought the 1987 gt. when I bought it the gas tank was half full, it went down then I filled it. The needle hasn't gone down since as it should have. So I'm wondering how I can get it to move, what could be wrong with it, and is this a common problem with these cars? I was hoping that it was just getting really good gas mileage, but no.

My 87gt reads full until i get to about a quarter tank then it will start reading correctly. Does your low fuel light work?

Its most likely the sending unit and yes its pretty common in the foxes. At least the 3 i have owned were the same way.

I don't know if the fuel light works or not, I've never been that low. Is it a big deal to fix the sending unit?

Not a big deal. Just make sure u have a pretty empty tank and drop the tank down and swap out the $60 sending unit and put it all back together.

So I have discovered that once I get down to 5/8 of a tank it works.
