90 lx rear offset - Mustang Evolution

90 lx rear offset

Have a 90 lx with rear five lug disk break set up. Rear is 1 3/4 wider now "I think" n e one know what offset and tire size I need fir street/strip? Have 17Cora r style wheels now and want to go to the weld five star instead hate the 17. Thanks

if its 1.75" wider (total or .86 per side) then to maintain the stock fit you want to make each wheel sit in .86 more

the offset is the mounting location off the centerline of the wheel aka

10 inch wide wheel, center line is 5 inches. With a positive 25mm offset (or 1 inch) that means that the mount location is 4 inches in and the back spacing is the remainder (6 inches).

.86 = about 21.59mm per wheel difference than before

if it was 25mm before now you want it sunk in 21.59mm more so you would want MORE offset so add them 46.59mm

So a 6 inch back space should do but what about tire size without touching body the lip was rolled then I painted the car

Standard width rear ends work with a 5.5" "backspace" up to an 8" wide rim. A 9" wide rim needs a 6.0" backspace and a 10" wide rim requires a 6.5" wide rim and substantial inner fenderwell reworking and outer fender lip rolling.

If your rearend is 1.75" wider overall, divide that by 2 (0.875" or 7/8") and add that measurement to the backspaces required that I have shown.

8" Rim - 5.5 +.875 = 6.375" or 6 3/8"
9" Rim - 6.0 + .875 = 6.875" or 6 7/8"
10" Rim - 6.5 + .875 = 7.375" or 7 3/8"

Note: Those will not be a standard backspace for any wheel that I know of, so you would have to go up in backspacing size. to fit a particular rim to the wider rear end/car.
Example: An 8" rim may now require a 6.5" backspacing to fit the car with the wider rear end.

You may not be able to find the Weld Pro Star wheels in the backspace you will need. Whenever a wider than stock rear end is used, it severely limits your wheel choices.
Personally, I would try to find a Mustang width 8.8 to put under the car.

I had a friend tell me you could use 2 drivers side Ford Ranger axles and there was a place online that made a bracket to move the rear calipers back in and it would be back to standard width what tire size can I run on the 5 star

Yes, you can do that, IF the housing is the correct length. Not for sure about which side axles you need from the Ranger, but they do that all the time to convert 79-93 Mustangs to 5 lug.

You can run up to a 295/50/15 and maybe even bigger, BUT they will require 10" rims with 6.5" backspace and a LOT of clearancing. There is an article or maybe a video in the "Useful Info" sticky thread that shows how to do it.
