Can I build a high performance 302 with an old block from 1983?

Hey guys, My 1983 Mustang's 302 is out of the car and I've got it stripped down to the block. I was wondering if the block that I have can handle the modification. I was going to have it entirely rebuilt (new heads, carburetor, intake/exhaust manifold, cam, etc.) Thanks in advance guys!

This is a very popular motor to modify. Lots of good aftermarket parts available for this engine.

You might want to pull the oil pan before you even start to see if you have a 4 bolt main block. If it is only a 2 bolt main block you will be limited on how much power increases the block can withstand. If it is only a 2 bolt main block consider replacing the block. Most truck engines had 4 bolt mains.

Next it may be a good idea to completely disassemble the engine and bring at least the block, crank, pistons, and rods to a good automotive machine shop. Have them magnafluxed to make sure there are no cracks. If you intend to replace the rods and/or pistons you don't need to bother with these.

If all checks out good the size of your checkbook is your only limitation.

Good luck on your project.
