What are common reasons for having a loss of power?

1987 mustang 5.0 stock

last week i noticed i lost some getup and i need to know the common reasons so i can start from the bottom of the list and work my way up. it feel like im riding with the parking brake on (im not) so i cut off one of my cats to see if they were clogged... i feel a little power gained back, but idk if thats frrom having less back pressure of it they really are clogged =( today im putting in a new cap & rotor, since thats the only thing i didnt change when i did a tune up a while back.. so if the new cap & rotor doesnt work, what are other common things i can check? thanks

Air and fuel filter are two likely causes.
