My 1990 mustang runs hot, what could be the problem?

i have a 1990 mustang gt. when i drive in town the temp gauge shows that it gets to about 235-240 then drops back to half or little below. When im on the interstate going between 70 and 75 mph. the gauge goes up to about 260-265 then drops but no further than about 240. then it repeats. i changed the thermostat and that didn't fix the problem. any suggestions?

Fan problems usually are shown while city driving. While driving down the highway, tons of air is flowing through your radiator. Unless you bought the car new and have kept up with the maint, assume the fluid has never been changed and your system is full of corrosion and junk. I'd suggest taking it out and either having it cleaned and rodded, or get a new one if the price is right.

The fan on the engine could have stopped turning, that's why my mustang was getting over heated and steaming. Go to a professional mechanic to check it out. It will keep overheating, and plus it just might even do it on your way to a mechanic as well. I don't know very much about cars but i know my car was overheating, so I hope that this helped friend.

Check the fluid in the radiator be sure it is full and that you do have antifreeze not just water. remove the temp probe and clean it. test your thermostat by placing in a microwavable bowl or cup of water and heat up to see if it is opening up!! you can get a bad thermostat from the parts store! Flush your radiator out good, Check your belt for tension issues and water pump for flow by squeezing the outlet hose.
