Belt Tensioner

Has anyone had any problems with the stock tensioner on the 1994-95 cars? Mine seems to be tightened down but it moves at idle. Not the pulley, but the whole mechanism. Bad spring in the tensioner maybe? It makes a clanking sound at idle as well. Thanks

It should move some when the motor is running, however the spring can weaken over time and the assembly will need to be replaced.

The odometer stopped at 173k in 2006 lol I suppose it is probably in need of replacement. The idler pulley tends to make noise so I may replace that one as well.

it may just be a worn belt. If you are going to replace those other parts, slap a new belt on there as well.

Just got a new belt 4 days ago because of UDPs and the belt before that was only 3 months old because I deleted the smog pump. I'll replace the tensioner and see if that fixes it.

Was it doing it before the UDP and new belt?

Nope. Is there a possibility that the UDP caused the tensioner to start failing?

Are you positive you have the right length belt?

I'm pretty sure I do. It fits fairly tight on the front accessories. I used the routing in this link. The length of the belt I got is 89.5" tho. http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...lt_routing.jpg

That's odd.. Maybe it's too tight.. There should be a guide in a Haynes or Chiltons how to manually check the tension with a straight edge between two pulleys and measuring how far you can move the belt.. Free test before throwing parts at it.

I'll check that tonight I suppose. I really don't mind throwing parts at it but if I don't have to, I won't.
