| AFR heads
Well I've made up my mind that AFR has the proven gains I want but I still have questions for you engine building guys. I am aware that the 165cc heads will probably clear the valves on a stock cam but what about the 185s? I ask this because I honestly don't want to have to check clearance with clay then have to clean pistons. I just want to bolt on and go. I believe AFR recommends not using a cam with over .500 lift? Also on stock bottom end and stock cam, what would the 185ccs with 58cc combustion chambers raise the compression to approximately? I'd like to be upwards of 10.5:1. Anyone and everyone weigh in on this if you'd like to. Thanks

Yep. That's what I've been told but I'm just trying to be cautious. I'd hate to pay 1500$ for them and find out I need fly-cut pistons. It is my dd after all. I suppose I should do a little more research.

From my research the trickflow 170s flow like the afr 180, just with a shorter runner due to the twisted wedge design. It also makes the trickflows much friendlier with larger cams on stock pistons

Trickflow/afr is one of those never ending debates. You can read a million threads about which ones are better. They are both great heads and you will be happy with either.
But to answer the op question. 185s has less valve clearance then the 165s. I believe the product information says "requires special pistons". But for a mild 302 build 165s are a great head. You wouldn't see much gain with a small cam and stock stroke going with the 185s over the 165s.

Also, the compression ratio should not change considering your stock heads are also 58cc.

I think if you match the cam up better with a set of trick flow heads I have a lot of friends with 170 track heats going 11.6 with stock bottom end and 5 speed, which head you want is a personal preference flow numbers aren't everything it's about the velocity the that makes the power also. But trick flow and afr are both great company's can't go wrong

The area most likely to have clearance can be any where from -20* to +20* from tdc.
