Just by listening really, you can see evidence of it on the top of the pistons And if I remember correctly it can cause your spark plugs to fail.

Time you're car out correctly and see what it does. Pinging is the result of your timing being too advanced and the gas mixture igniting prematurely.

No, you should be fine. As 91 notch stated, just make sure you adjust your timing properly and you'll be good to go. Wouldn't be a bad idea to check your plugs to to make sure they are gapped correctly.

Ah, then yeah, you need to clean it so you can see, otherwise you could be doing more harm then good if you are trying to set it without a reference.

Lay under the car and have someone bump the starter over until the numbers are right in front of your face. Or you can do it all yourself by going back and forth, that's what I did last time.

If you are going to have someone help you or do it yourself, I would disconnect the coil wire so you don't have to worry about it starting while your under there. I would wear some good goggles or glasses and use some shop towels and carb cleaner to clean the balancer up. Once you clean it up, as was stated earlier, get a decent paint pen and mark the number ten. When your timing light hits it, it will almost glow. But until you clean it, there's no point in messing with your timing.

First things first now: you said you set your timing without knowing a baseline number. Get that straight first. TPS voltage should be .98-.99. I think it's in a different spot on your sn95 than on my fox. Its the red and green wires though with a voltmeter.

Agreed sir. But further up in the thread, he said he set his timing without knowing what number was on the harmonic balancer. TPS ain't gomna do nothin right now to fix the situation...

There's gotta be more going on. If your timing is right you may have a problem elsewhere. How was the pinging? Gone or still there? Did someone advance the timing before? If your timing was advanced before and you put it back to base of 10 then it may feel a bit sluggish. And are you having the original problem of starting issues?
