Definitely consider a cobra intake, heads, cam, chip, and headers

3.73 gears and good tires will drop a full second off of the quarter mile e.t. Like someone already said, a set of gt40/cobra heads and intake can be found relatively cheap. An E303 cam will do fine. A set of 24lb injectors with matching mass air and 70mm TB will take care of air intake. For exhaust, a set of long tune headers with matching shorty offroad xpipe paired up to your choice of after cat exhaust will sound great. Don't forget about upgrading the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator as well. With a proper tune, this is a tried and true upgrade that has been done since the mid 90's that will be very satisfying until the "I wanna go faster bug" bites your in the butt. Have fun!

Stock headed/cammed 5.0 will generally do 13s with bolt ons. Any faster and you're looking at a HCI/stroker or a power adder. Or some serious weight reduction... Really cheap combo that will max out the stock block is a S trim and a GT40 iron combo with the stock cam. 450whp all day, stock driveability and you can't really do more power than that without risking blowing the stock block into a billion pieces.

Ok, all the above have great examples of making tried and true HP. With a 5 speed you can also get away with 4.10's depending on what your commute is and if it's a daily driver. I would at the very least go with gears, a decent set of heads whether they be gt40's or the gt40p's, and an improved flowing intake such as the cobra or explorer and improve the exhaust. With a cam I've seen guys with this combo go low 12's to high 11's and even know of one who's out d the norm running very low 11's with an intake, cam and other than that stock 90k explorer motor.

11s with a 260-275whp modded exploder motor... that is some serious weight reduction and like 4.56 gears.

Times aren't everything though, ppl tend to get lost in numbers, be it times or dyno numbers. If you aren't taking the car to the 1/4 for some serious competition I wouldn't sweat it too much. Having a nice running, quick and CLEAN fox is a rare thing these days. You'll get way more props for a clean bolt on 5.0 than some dude with a beat up 9 second drag car will honestly.

He's actually pushing 340 rwhp.

And that's a good point, you don't see many clean and mostly original cars out there anymore. Most fall into the second category of beat up but fast. I would shoot for clean with some bolt ons as well and maybe a cam if you really want that sound.

On unported GT40s? That is hard to believe... with a REALLY good port job, ported intake a custom tune that is even pretty high.

Find it hard to believe myself. I dont see a set of stock iron heads and intake outflowing a top end kit of an aftermarket company with better qualities.

You can check him out in YouTube, tooslow86. Yeah, I agree they are very impressive for an untouched bottom end and unported gt40p's.

Then again I had a close friend who I helped put the car together, had e7's with an explorer intake, b cam, with full exhaust, 3.73's and weight trimming running 12.20's back in the late 90's. So I don't see it that unbelievable.

I do, there is no way in hell unported GT40s are making that number without a power adder. Mabye FWHP, that would be right on the money.

He's got an aftermarket intake but stock gt40p long block minus a custom ground cam, 24lb injectors, and the supporting MAF, and years of tune tweaking.

Miller, back to your original question, like Scotty, I am a big fan of the cast gt40 or gt40p heads and explorer intakes. They are great performance pieces and you can't beat them for the money. You can couple those with the stock cam for a good power increase or put in a cam to take more advantage of the added air flow.

Most people over look suspension also. You can have a 700 hp car but if you aren't putting the power to the ground it doesn't matter. So with the right suspension and tweaking there's no reason someone with 349hp can't run 11's
