Crunchy 3rd gear

Whenever I shift into third it's very crunchy unless i go into third slowly. Also when I downshift into third there's no sound. What can I do to solve this? I've been taking it easy into third to stop the sound and wear and tear but how can I solve this

Not sure, sounds like gears are worn or not aligned properly. For time being, try skipping 3rd. Shift from 2nd to 4th until you can get it sorted. Only use third if necessary. It sounds like 3rd is not spinning up fast enough to sync. Seems like that would explain why it doesn't crunch when downshifting. When downshifting it is already spinning fast enough to mesh easily, when up shifting maybe it is slipping so not spinning up as fast as motor. Try shifting into 3rd at different rpm ranges to see if it only happens at certain levels.

I'm probably just going to change the fluid and clutch cable and quadrant and just baby her until I can rebuild her

It's a T-5, 3rd gear is notoriously bad in those transmissions. If your clutch is not engaging fully or your fluid is old it could be as simple as that though.

3rd gear upshift is bad, easy to grind if you're not careful, you probably need at least one new synchro.
