91 GT Emissions

Today the "green monster" failed emissions for HC. Need to make sure it's fixed by car show time. It was a Massachusetts car, which dosen't emissions test that year, so it has no CATs. Passed the high RPM no problem, but failed the idle (427ppm against the 220ppm limit). I'm ordering my CATTED x-pipe tomorrow and this is also what has been done to it. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, filter, cleaned MAF sensor. When I do the pipes I'm also going to be double checking timing. The engine was warmed from the ride right before the test, so I don't think the smog delete would be an issue.

My question is, what else should I be looking at?

I'm amazed they even smogged you with no cats. I tried that once in DE with my old 91 and they told me to GTFO and slapped a rejected sticker on the windshield. The inspector actually told me he technically should have made me get out and either get my own tow truck or they would at my own expense... didn't tho...

Cats should fix you right up, if it still fails try pulling the spout and running it through again. It'll run like complete **** but it should pass.

Yeah im surprised they did also. I went up to craigs on 38. They were pretty cool about it. I wanted to see if it was going to pass w/o the cats, if it did just weld some hollowed out scrap yards cats in there for state purposes lol. But I guess its brand new x-pipe for me!

Not sure what the timing is at now, got to pick up a light gun before this weekend.

They check under the car with mirrors to look for CATs. NJ is pretty emissions crazy.

Haha, if it passed without the CATs I could have just welded the heat shields to make it look like a CAT lol but at idle it was way off

Hahahahahaha. Not too bright are they. Must suck having to do emissions testing. I have eliminated the cats from both cars and my truck. love the free flow.

CATTED x-pipe, cleaned MAF sensor, new filter.

Before my first test I had already done plugs, wires, coil, cap n rotor, fuel filter. Failed at idle because of no CATs

I dont have a smog either, my high rpm HC was like 75ppm against the 220 standard. But my idle was way off. I'm not a fan of running CATs but NJ is kinda Nazi about emissions.

NJ has real specific exemptions for no emissions and one of them is if you have historic plates, which then limits you to a crazy low mileage cap per year. This staye is pretty dumb.

It's all because of the population density, they need those dumb laws because of New york and all the manufacturing that used to go on in NJ

Until a cop pulls you over for your loud exhaust and looks under your car and you have 48 hours to fix and pay a fine. I know I know... cops up there don't give a ****. Well they gave a **** when they nailed my buddy for no cats on his 04 GT right outside of Green Bay... Just sayin...

He's more than welcome to get himself or herself down under my lowered fox and have a look.

But then my exhaust isn't the loudest either so I never get pulled over for noise.
