gears

Car currently has 3.55's and want more bite. Should I just go straight to the 4.10's or look into the 3.73 or 3.90s. Wont be on the highway much at all. But dont want RPM's screamin around town either.

if you aren't on the highway much 4.10's would be great. I had them in my 88 and I would smoke everyone off the line. I actually purchased 3.73 gears and a B 303 cam but ended up getting rid of the car so I'm stuck with them lol

Did you notice your rpm alot higher around town? Most of my roads around here are 60 mph and right now with my 3 speed c4 tranny I'd be roughly 2000 rpm. Which is pretty good for a 3 speed I think.

not so much through town but my town the speed limit is 35 so I would just cruise in 3rd gear around 2,400 RPM. it would make the car rumble as I just cruised. but man I haters driving on the highway with them.

I have 4.10's in my manual 2000 GT. And I drove hwy miles for 4 years. An hour trip to and from work, and I would have to fill up almost every other day. If I had to do over again, I probably woulda went with 3.73's, but i believe the general rule of thumb is 3.73 with 5 speed, and 4.10 with an auto. May I repeat its a general rule, as everyone has their own, usually valid opinion on this topic.

I have 4.11a and my Car is a aode when I had my stock converter my RPMs were high , highway I was at 4,000 RPMs doing 75mph.

Now I have a 3,000 rpm stall converter and my RPMs are alot less , highway now my RPMs are around 2,800 - 3,000 RPMs while Cruising

That's not to bad at all. I only drive her a couple times a week when the weather is nice, rarely on the highway. Being only a 3 speed, mayb I should just stick with 3.73s, which isnt much of a jump from 3.55s tho

If you plan on adding a power adder down the road I would stay with 3.55s or 3.73s

Yeah, 3.90 it the happy medium for sure. I don't think it makes a difference, but if you get 3.90's you'd have to go with An aftermarket ring and pinon. Ford Racing doesn't make it.

Oh yeah true. I think motive also makes a 3.90, but 50/50 on the reviews saying they hum pretty bad, but who knows if that person put them in right

Yeah both companies make em, and the hum probably has a lot to do with the install and lash. They should hold up just fine

Well the roads around here are all speed limit 45-50 but we all know NJ drivers will ride your *** and then go flying around with their hand out the window telling you you are number 1 if you don't do at least 10-15 over... Hell, new ppl here learn real quick that if you aren't doing 70+ on the highway you're going to get run off the road lol. Gotta love NJ...

I dunno I'm not a huge fan of whirring along at 3000+ in these cars, you'd have to see what your RPMs would be on routes you normally take and see if that's fine with you. Use the RPM calculator site that everyone uses (1st google result) and figure out what you'll be at and see if that is ok with you.

Lol drivers are like that here in nc too...if you go the speed limit you get treated like miss grandma just cruising around.

Thanks scotty, didnt know there was a calculator. Normally right now, going up 4mile or magnolia I'll be going around 2,000-2,200 @ 65mph ish. I'll have to see if autozone or napa has the tool to measure the lash as well. I was a mechanic for years b4 the AF, but never really got into internals or aftermarket swaps.

**Update**

Calculator says from 3.55 to 4.10 will only increase rpm roughly 500 @ 70mph. Not to bad.

Sorry for thread jacking! But sort of still on topic...so im in the process of breaking in my gears so im driving her gently and there was a huge pot hole in an intersection so i swung wide to avoid it and took it slow and some idiot kid flew up on my blowing the horn and the speed limit was 35 and i was at 40 and he started laying on the horn and it pissed me off so i went to 35 (speed limit!) and he flew around me and brake checked me then the good part....he had to turn immediately after and couldnt because of traffic so i started laying on my horn back at him for slamming on the brakes just to wait to turn and his face turned red lol...kids man

Haha thats funny. I like messin with kids that act like idiots. We have a lot of 1 lane roads but they are passable roads. I was already going 10 over and some eclipse tried to pass me up. So I dropped it down a gear and dumped it. Had enough time to see his GF in the passanger side then smoked him. How embarrassing for him lol

Or you can have a shop do it. There's that Mustang place right by base housing that is supposed to be decent but I dunno. There is always Wicked in Toms River. They'll do you right if you need an install.

If you run a .63 overdrive t5z with 4.10, it is like 3.79 with the .68 overdrive of the stock tranny. Plus they have the right speedo gear to make speedometer right And, I like the 2.95 first instead of the granny gear 3.35. Or the .59 od of the GForce is even better

Why do they still list them separately if they are the same gear from the same company?

I'm planning on 4.10's for my 86 with a 5 speed. Had 3.73's before in a couple cars and they were great but I want that little extra out of the hole.
