MAF accepts the mods better than sd because maf calculates air flow/fuel requirements, sd uses a table of predetermined scenarios, so it changes based on air flow in steps. Think of sd as a set of stairs, and maf as an escalator. Also maf calculates earlier in the combustion process, I.e. prior to reaching the intake.

You have to change computer and harness to 87-93, use a9l or a9p computer if you depending on trans type.

You may want an x cam, but it may not be what's right for your set up. You have to build for a cam, you can't just go swapping cams and expect it to work perfectly. I.e. you need supporting mods, such as maf...going to an cam would be too much for sd to work right. I'm not sure of cams numbers, but sd only accepts mild mods.
