Computer

How can I tell if my computer in my 95GT is bad? Is there a way to have it checked?

Why do u suspect the computer is bad? I'm not 100%, but I would think it would throw a code if something was wrong...you could prolly have it tested by local parts store.

Auto parts store should be able to check it. Why do you suspect computer is bad?

Sorry, first reply wouldn't post, so I cancelled it, and tried again, that's why there are two of the same thing.

The older OBDII PCM's are much more difficult to check, if faulty. Since a Ford Tech can't plug in their scan tools to flash the overall PCM. However, there is an input port for data to transfer in the OBDI PCM's, which a Ford Dealer may be able to connect to, but I can't say I've ever tried in on this style PCM.

Regardless, what makes you think the PCM is bad? PCM's VERY rarely go bad. Most of the time PCM's are diagnosed faulty, there's really a separate electrical issue causing the original problem(s).

Give me some more details about the issues you're experiencing and we may be able to figure out what's going on!

I had a screw chip from american muscle but when it was in it made the car act like as if someone turned the key of and on real quick while I was driving and the idle jump up and stay up high. I've changed everything now I notice at idle the the alternator needle jump up and down slightly with the idle. I need serious help

This could be as simple as a few bad grounds. Also, check the main power line coming off the alternator and make sure it's not corroded/rusted. It sounds like the who care isn't getting consistent power and is trying to survive on the fumes it's running on. I think you should try and through electric check before purchasing anything. Check all the grounds and main power wires. If they look okay, test the alternator and battery too!

Follow OBD I KOEO and KOER, cylinder balance test etc. Computer will test itself as part of the diagnostics.

That's definitely not going to help your issue! Good find. However, as long as the engine is running- I don't see how this would drastically impact the voltage from the alternator enough to vary with engine surge. How well does the car idle actually? Is the RPM drastically varying?

The E303 camshafts idle smooth enough that the RPM's should be jumping. How much are they ranging exactly?

Also, you're correct about fixing this before adjusting the tune. Otherwise the Bama Team will be chasing their tail for corrections if the car is not mechanically sound. Smart move!

Now what other details can you give me about the cars current condition? Tell me everything you've already checked.

Shane

Do you have factory gauges? How much does the voltage needle jump?

How old is the MAF sensor? Have you tried cleaning it with MAF cleaner? If not, you might as well since this is cheap maintenance. If it helps, than great, if not than at least you have MAF cleaner for the future.

Looks like you have the right base timing too (10*). Did you say the lights were flickering or just the voltage is moving? Can you take a quick video of the cars symptoms and post it?

So I pulled the computer and replaced it with another one just the same and didn't put the chip in the new computer and it runs fine. Good but now don't know if the chip killed computer or did it just go bad.
