Solenoid working or not

Ok past few days my 91 has had trouble starting. First time I tightened connections on battery it fired up just fine. 2nd time I added a bit if water to battery it fired up just fine again. I took battery to get tested and it's fine so I figured must b connections again so I cleaned terminals and retightened everything it fired up. 10 min later it won't start again. When I turn key it nothing happens. A slight clunk and that's it. Sometimes I can still get the radio on and lights sometimes they don't. I'm starting to think its my starter solenoid so how do I know if it's working or not and where do I go from here. And if it helps I'm EFI

Look for anything grounding out especially if you have a speaker system

No wires grounded, I haven't really inspected alternator that much I haven't gotten tested cuz it's new but I guess it won't hurt to eliminate all possibilities .

All you have to do is get the car started and unplug one connection from the battery and if the car stays running your altinator is ok and your battery is bad if your car turns off after you disconnect its your altinator thats a easy test right there

Yea it'd b amazing if I can get it to start lol. I bought a new solenoid but it was the wrong one, I put it on anyways just to test it and see if car would turn but still nothing but lights and radio. So I'm taking the solenoid back and getting the right one and ima try it. Once I get off work ima check all my connections with alternator but I also tried to jump start my battery yesterday(with a chevy 😞) and it still did nothing. Is it the starter still, shud I take it back off and get it tested somewhere else?

I've tried jumping it twice lol ironically the first time a friend of mine in his 2012 boss jumped me it started right up. Second time the Chevy was a no go. But yea I tightened my terminals still nothing, but I had my gf buy another solenoid while I was at work, gave her the old one and a pic of the exact same one I should have, the guy who tested my starter still gave her the wrong one. Starting to rethink taking starter out and get it tested somewhere else. I put the new solenoid in best I could just see if it would work and still nothing

It's clearly my starter or solenoid so quick question..the solenoid I have has 4 terminals on it, the one I see that I can order for my yr mustang has 3 and 4 terminals on them but they aren't the exact same as my current solenoid. Does it matter?

Test the starter solenoid by connecting a jumper cable to the battery side of the solenoid. The solenoid has two large posts and two small posts. A single large post is located on either side of the solenoid. Attach the alligator clip of the jumper cable to the large post on the battery side of the solenoid. Touch the opposite end of the jumper cable to the large post on the other side of the solenoid. If the starter turns the engine normally, the problem likely lies with an ignition override switch, such as a clutch start switch or a neutral safety switch. If the starter produces a buzzing sound, the starter is likely defective. If there is no response at all, the solenoid is defective and must be replaced.

Does it matter if its the positive or negative side of jumper cables?
