Steering column

The other day I went to start my 95 GT, and I heard a snap. Car started fine, and when I went to shut it off, nothing. Key would come right out with the car running, and I couldn't get it to shut off. Dropped it off at my mechanic and he told me a gear inside the steering column broke, causing it to not be able to shut off. He said it would be easiest and probably cheapest to replace the entire steering column. He said if I bring him the column he'll do it for $125.

Any idea how much the column costs or where to get one? I can't find anything on it.

Sounds like the ignition cylinder went bad, this is relatively common, is a $35 part and literally takes 5 minutes to swap out.

Mustang Ignition Lock Cylinder - Black (94-95 All) - Free Shipping

See that metal button on the cylinder? You push that in while you have the key in the ignition and turned and wiggle the old one out. New one sides right in. You can get to the button by removing the plastic column covers which is 2 or 3 philips screws.

You sure that's all I need? That's what I thought too and I showed my mechanic and he said I need the entire column. If that's all I need I'll order it first thing tomorrow morning.

I am not guaranteeing you that'll fix it but there is a very good chance. I mean if it doesn't you can always just return it I guess...

I have a guy who has a 98 steering column for $40. Will the 98's fit a 95?

Nope, tried it when I swapped interiors because I couldn't find my damn puller. The column bolts up but the shaft is different. Might be able to cannibalize the parts out of it though.

Alright thanks a lot! I got a second opinion today and they recommend replacing the steering column as well. I'm having a lot of trouble finding one. Spending all day tomorrow calling junkyards, hopefully I can find one!
