J4J1 or T4M0

I have a little project truck that's getting a 5.0 from an 96 explorer with legit GT40 heads. I plan on building the motor up and running the explorer IM and I already have a full wire harness from a 95 cobra as well as a manual trans.

So one faithful day I was looking for a computer and I found a cobra j4j1 and a regular GT T4M0 on eBay. I bid on both thinking I would lose one, well I won them both. So I have both of these computers. I realize the cobra computer is tuned for 30lb or 24 lb injectors if I recall correctly and the t4m0 is the 18lb.and forgive me for being rusty on the details, it's been a while since I bought all this stuff. My project has been stale since I bought my coyote.

So here is the question. Which computer do I keep? I believe the injectors that are in my explorer manifold are the same as the stock Gt. but I will eventually get a tune for this vehicle. It will be a no frills weekend, having fun ride. What's my best bet? I've heard the T4M0 is a pain to tune, but then I've heard the j4j1 is a waste of money because the T4M0 can be programmed with the J4j1 platform if so desired. Any help is appreciated 👍🏻

They're the same computer hardware wise. The Cobra and GT tunes are different as you stated. Biggest difference is indeed the injectors. J4J1 is 24s, T4M0 is 19s.

So basically... sell whichever one you think you can get more money for and use the other one in your build.

Well I'd imagine the J4J1 is worth more. I actually scored on it and got it for like 45 bucks if I'm not mistaken? The guy listed it terribly. No mention of it being a cobra computer or the J4J1 code. I believe it was "95 mustang computer" lol.

Thanks for the reply Scotty. Guess I will list it.

List it for $100 plus shipping and take $100 shipped for it. That's about the going rate for them. A lot of ppl want them because they think they need #24 injectors for bolt ons and are too cheap/lazy to actually tune the car or its cheaper to buy a $100 computer than a $150+ "calibrated" (hacked) MAF.

Those ppl are not the smartest tools in the shed but their money is green so...

J4J1 or T4M0

Well the cheapest one I could find on eBay is 250 and 13 shipping, some as high as 350! So I listed mine at 224.99 free shipping. Worth a shot.

Jesus H. Christ... lol well I guess they are getting rarer and rarer... Although ebay is not a good place to gauge prices... they overcharge for everything and ebay is going to be catering the the "unwashed masses" who don't know jack **** about these cars other than the guy at Midas told them their computer was fried and they need a new one and "omg autozone doesn't have it oh noes ebay!". They list for $100-$125 on the corral but if you can get $225 for it, definitely try.

IMO, just swap in a A9L, sell the T4M0 too and call it good. You need to move about 12 pins, add a fan controller and a BAP. Feels like the car picks up 50rwhp. I didn't believe it till I did it.

Granted, a real good tuner can do the same thing with the SN95 computer but it was REAL nice to do any bolt on I wanted to my 95 Cobra and not have to worry about a sketch *** first run EEC IV tune from Ford that was way more worried about fuel consumption than power.

Yeah I agree it's high and I feel a little dirty. But I could use the mod money

The A9L is the auto comp correct? Talk to me about this swap. Never heard of it. Is it really worth it vs just using the T4M0?

No, the A9L is the fox stick shift computer. A9M or A3M are also variants of it that work.

If you are not comfortable with re-pinning and soldering and wiring in a controller/BAP I would just get the T4M0 tuned. Unless you can find a plug and play PIH harness like the one I sold for $300 (plus $100 for the A9L) a few years ago lol. That thing lasted all of 5 minutes on the Corral haha. They stopped making them in like 2001.

Ahh. Well being that I have a blank canvas and am not dependent on having any one wire harness would it be better to just run a 93 5.0 manual trans harness and the A9L? I'm assuming this is the reason for the repin? I actually solider all the time. I repair electronic circuit boards here and there. So that's not a prob.

I already have a wire harness, but I suppose I could sell it and start over. What would you do? Just imagine you have a 5.0 manual trans blank canvas.

No wiring at all. Lol.

I have to find the re-pin instructions... its not hard at all. I'd run the harness in the SN95 and do the re-pin like everyone else who swaps. Or just run the T4M0 and tune it like I said. Your call.

I'm game on the re-pin. If you can find it that would be great. I will start looking for a A9L. I already have a few watchers on the J4J1! Lol
