Help! Oil pump rod retainer fell in engine...

Last Saturday me and a buddy of mine were doing an intake gasket on my 89 mustang 5.0.

I took off the intake upper and lower to clean up to install new gaskets.

My buddy pulled the distributor up to get it out and the rod was stuck in the dizzy. He pulled the whole rod with dizzy out of the engine and the oil pump retainer fell into the motor.

My question is, can I drain oil and the retainer will just come out? Or must I take the engine apart in order to get it out?

I've been told by some that the retainer is a soft metal and won't damage anything if I leave it in there. My next plan is to put a magnet on the outside of my oil pan so the retainer stays put until I can take the engine out again because it's a p.i.t.a. To get off when the engine is installed.

Any one who has had this happen please give me some advice as I am not sure what to do in this situation.

Thanks.

If you take the timing cover off, you can access the front of the oil pan, and you may be able to retrieve the retainer with a magnet or some other method.

If you can't get it out, it won't hurt anything. And someday it might come out during an oil change!

I suppose that if he gets a flexible retrieval tool with a small enough magnet on it, he may be able to "fish" it out through the distributor hole.
