Can you get somebody to push & pull on the hood release lever under the dash while you watch the latch mechanism,to see if its going back into the lock position once the lever is released??The latch could be sticking in the release position when you pull the hood release then let go & once you close the hood again, the latch is still remaining stuck in the release position.Try pushing the hood release lever forward then try shutting the hood.If the latch or the cable is sticking,it wont let the release lever snap back into its normal position once you let go of it.The latch bolts can also loosen up,allowing the latch to move so that its hook doesn't catch on the hood.Make sure the hook isn't bent too.If the cable itself is sticking, your better off replacing it rather than trying to lubricate it.

It looks like the part it locks onto, when I push down on the hood it isn't pushing down on the lock enough to lock, like it's too hard even if I just do it with my hands without pushing down with the hood

Glad to hear. Doesn't hurt to spray some lube on it either, had some issues opening my hood when I first got my car back in the summer, sprayed some lube and it was good. You had a little different situation but hey it won't hurt.
