Have You Broken Your TREMEC Input Shaft?

Has anyone else twisted their input shaft on their TREMEC in half? I've managed to do that with my 3550. Hit third gear, it over revved and wouldn't go in any gear. When we pulled the the transmission out, the pictures show what we found.

The Spec 3+ clutch seems to be fine. It held the 595+ lbs./ft. of torque the engine produces (at the wheels) and the input shaft broke and took a chunk of the steel bearing retainer with it.

Since I'm pretty much stuck with the 3550...
  • Can it be hardened?
  • Does anyone make a 2.95 or so first gear for it?
  • Are the road race overdrives still available?

Thanks for your input. BTW, when I get a new transmission, from your experience, what have you had good luck with? I am using a Hurst Shifter and a Line Lock. My shifting style is keeping the throttle on the floor, stabbing and grabbing... the strip.
