Well then maybe we should rename this to the V6 tech section, because 4.2L engine questions are asked here also, and even being the mod for this section, I don't have a 3.8L. Weird huh?

3.8L engines are actually 3.7L engines incorrectly rounded up.

That's not correct, they are 3.8 Liters. I think you're doing the math incorrectly. It comes out to about 3.81 liters depending on what numbers you use. 3.8" for the bore and 3.4" for the stroke.

Bore = 3.80
Stroke = 3.40

3.80 x 3.80 x .7854 x 3.40 x 6 = 231.36CID
231.36 x 16.39 = 3791.99CC
3791.99 / 1000 = 3.79L

I made the mistake of saying they are rounded incorrectly. But still comes up as 3.7L. And they aren't 232, either. So much for the emblems.

232 looks better than 231.36 on the side of a car. I'm sure Eval would make you the custom 231.36 emblems if you want.

of course, the fact that 232 looks better doesn't make it okay.

3.9L was just a marketing scheme that someone at ford came up with, they are no bigger no smaller than the previous yrs engine's 3.8L

Here try this link:

I've heard various numbers for the bore and stroke, for bore I've heard 3.79 to 3.81 and for stroke i've heard 3.39 to 3.41. Either way, you get about the same numbers and it still comes out to 3.8 rounded out.

ummm.......no it wasnt actually there are no indications of it being a 3.9 vs. a 3.8 except on the valve cover and most people dont even look there and they are actually bigger but not by much or at least thats what i've been told be the LSS resident v-6 expert.

Yea, i believe we're changing the name to "v6 tech"

cause people sport so many different v6's these days.

The 3.9 is the same block as the 3.8. I also believe it came with a whopping 3 extra horsepower. So it was worth fords extra effort. LOL.

Same horsepower output as the 01-03/mid 04s, has a slight overbore than the 3.8,basically fords way to use up pistons etc. that were too tight of tolerance for the 3.8 blocks....atleast thats what i heard
