if you dint know already.....

i love to fiberglass.

this is the first attempt on a brand new enclosure. instead of what i did the past 3 times and tried to go back and fix what i did wrong cause i didnt quite know everything, i decided that since i am well versed in glassing i should start from scratch with a whole new design.

still using my audiobahn entry level flamer subs and 1300 watt amp. new to the mix is the Kicker 6.2 component set. ill let you know im not much of a kicker fan, but the salesman turned these suckers up and put in the THX surround sound cd in and man these sounded awesome. they had 2 sets of them, front and rear and god dam, i was impressed by the clarity even at very loud levels, levels i will never even reach they sounded perfect. the components will be mounted in the top parts on each side where the little wood is thats supported right now by electrical tape(so see how they looked) later will be screwed in and glassed over. subs will still be inverse mount just because it looks ****ing sweet. amp will rest on the top part, with the component crossovers sunken in towards the top of the top part.

theres alot of wood there for a reason. last box warped on us during the frontal glassing, and thus never sat right when put in the car. this SHOULDNT warp and with everything in it still sit in the car perfect.

more progress......

put lots of fiberglass between the sub boxes and the fiberglass mold to make them airtight(unlike last years). still need to fill in a few more spots, just for my security so i know theyre perfect.

dont know if i like them(the subs) better normal mount(cone inside the box) or reverse mount(cone in the air). i think im going towards normal mount this time, because with the subs reverse mount it looks very cluttered. might look better if it was in the car, but its raining right now and not enough room to put the box in in the garage.

like the flush mount crossovers? my freinds idea.

Haha, thats really gnnna look nice when it's all finished up. What color are you gonna paint it? Or you gonna wrap it in something.

Out of curiousity, how much does the whole thing weigh you think?

its gonna get painted black. i have lots of bondo work ahead of me.

and it doesnt weigh much really. i can still move it around by myself, though once the subs and amp and bondo is done ill need help to move it.

updates.......

tacked in some sheet(a very nice floral print i must say) so make the contours of the upper sides all smooth, then just applied resin to that and let it harden.

gonna do some glassing tomorrow early and cut out the component openings, then possibly put massive amounts of body filler everywhere.

I like using fleece more than a sheet...I always use blue fleece. Fleece just stretches better for my applications.

i like fleece too but i dont like to go into the fabric store, i feel like a ***. besides my mom had some of this laying around from when we repainted the house, so it was free.

all i did today was round out the inside corners with fiberglass reinforced bondo(the nasty green **** with the straw in it already) and added some more glass to the upper sides for strength, nothing worth pics.

tomorrow comes massive bondo'n.

well im at the long drawn out part. i slapped ****loads of body filler on it wed night and been sanding since. today(friday) i have the upper lip done(and yes it took me 3 hours to shade the upper lip) and the top part of the sides. now im doing the inside edges and the sub valleys. the inside corners are a pain in the ***, i cant fit my DA sander in there, so i have to carefully use the belt sander.

i wanted to work on it all day but we have a big storm overhead now so itll have to wait till later.

im hoping to have it all done by next weekend. im pretty sure i can get the sanding done in 5 hours max, i should have it all smoothed out by middle of this week. then primer, minor sanding, paint, wetsanding, clearcoat, install.

id get pics but who cares about a ****load of sanding.

Updates!!!!!!

sanding is still in progress. still need to fill in a few pot holes which i can do with bondo spot filler putty stuff. for some reason when i put the body filler over the bottom part(the part still ripply in the pics) i guess there wasnt enough hardener so after a day its like almost hard clay. if i try to sand it it just gums up the pad and turns it from a da sander to a da buffer. as long as i get the center part smooth i could care less about the bottom sides cause when the seats are back you cant see **** down there, the seats come up flush with the box. as long as the top parts are smooth where most people will see and touch, and those are the parts im focusing my attention on.

primered, seat belt cutouts done, side edges were shaved and it now sits perfectly in the car. should have it painted tomorrow, and possibly even finished if i can find a store that stocks more than 1 can of clearcoat.

and im spent. got everything mounted then got it into the car, then realized the ground cable wouldnt reach the amp by 1 inch, so i had to pull it back out, move the ground to another spot, reinstall, then realized i put the subs in without even hooking up the wires to them, so had to do those again, bolted the subs in, then realized i forgot to put the little sub o-ring thingy, so had to take subs off then install the o ring.

then got it all thumping how i like, vacuumed the car(full of fiberglass hairs, wire shavings, papers) then took the car and got it washed and detailed it. then sanded down the workbench(had a layer of messy fiberglass and didnt want to hear it from my dad), then vacuumed and returned the garage to its condition before i got the idea to do another box.

next project - rebuilding my cousins n/t eclipse to take on 30psi and nitrous(but will only run 20psi with nitrous), doing a custom trunk/hatch enclosure, then a 2gB front conversion(97-99 like mine). all before the batman begins release date(he thinks he wants to get a custom graphic with batman on it, i told him no), and all under a budget of 7k.
