Project Ranger DD

Well guys I am going to go ahead and start this thread.

I have been doing lots or searching and reading and asking questions over at www.rangerpowersports.com about the ranger.

My ultimate goal is to make this a lowered street truck with a bit of muscle behind it.

Here is what I am starting with.

1997 Ford Ranger 2.3l 5 speed manual tranny.

might start this weekend if I can motivate myself.

I will start with...for now that is...doing a rear hanger flip. That should give me about a 2" rear drop. As the truck sits now stock, it sits approx 33" from ground to highest point in fender well and 30" up front. So that will level out the the truck.

As funds come available I will get some longer shackles and drop the truck about another 2" in the rear. then from there i will drop the front with 2" lowering coils. Give me a total of a 2/4 drop. That should be a good stance for a mildly moded street truck.

I am currently looking for headers and exhaust for the 2.3l to give it a little pep also.

Since I am dropping it, I will probably keep an eye out for some 16" wheels to give it a bit more of a tucked wheel look. I would never go bigger then 18s though. Im not all about the flashy, 20s. So finding wheels is a bit hard for me since I dont like all the chrome wheels and stuff like that you see in the avg magazine. I personally like 5 spoke and old school muscle car wheels the most.

eventually i will put a sub in the ranger. I miss having the bass like I did in the bronco.

then after that I will probably do minor cosmetics to it, some clear corners and maybe a billet grill is all im looking at in that area. nothing fancy, but something that looks good at the same time. I might eventually get a fiberglass tonnue cover too.

Re: Project Ranger DD

You wont get power out of an N/A 2.3L

go to turboford.org, and ask questions about a 2.3L turbo swap into your ranger

Re: Project Ranger DD

also the ranger/mustangs share the same 5x4.5 bolt pattern for wheels but the rangers need a spacer to run them to clear the hubs i think.

Re: Project Ranger DD

Yeah I would suggest either a 2.3T swap or a 5.0 to get the power. A n/a 2.3 wont go anywhere lol. If you need any help man feel free to ask me i know a good bit about rangers.

Re: Project Ranger DD

The only mustang wheels you can put on are the 94-95 pony wheels(aka the waffle wheels) however if your going street get some 17 or 18's and go with a 3-4 drop. If you like old school looking wheels go with the bullits of the stang. Looks great on rangers!

Re: Project Ranger DD

thanks guys...though im not about to drop a new motor, especially a 5.0. I like this truck for the MPG, but would still like to go up a 20* incline running 75 without slowing down to 65 just cause the truck cant push itself up the hill that fast. especially since this is my current DD, i can only do things that might take a weekend where i dont need to drive to work or what not. A buddy on another forum suggested a turbo as well, but since i have no personal experience with turbos im at a loss on info on those.

thanks for the bolt pattern, that is one of those things i didnt know. bronco has a 5x5.5 pattern.

im gonna go check out those bullits

Re: Project Ranger DD

all of those will look good, but if you lower it 17-18 will look much better. However you need to consider that if you go with say an 18in wheel with decent size tires on it. Then once you lower it the 2-3in that you are wanting to then it will end up bring the truck up a couple of inches so basicly you will be back to stock hight, but leveled out. So a 3-4 will probably be the best drop for you if you go that big.

Get them then. However you will need a spacer for the front so you can clear the hub. A 1-1/4 mustang spacer will work with it.

Re: Project Ranger DD

Put 36" swampers, a 3 inch body lift, 4 inch suspension and lift the motor mounts. Call it a day. Right?

Re: Project Ranger DD

that 2.3L wouldnt be able to motivate a truck with some swampers

in all reality bro, you wont be able to get much muscle out of that truck with a 2.3L, it would be the equivalent a person like me. I have muscle tone, but i sure as hell dont have much muscle.

If youre worried about milage, 2.3L turbo is the way to go, i got 32mpg on the highway not too long ago.

why when i already have this

the reason im dropping it is

1)I love the look of a lowered truck
2)I already have a trail rig
3)This is my DD, I lower it, Ill keep it on the road, it wont break like the bronco

Ill probably end up doing the turbo a little down the road. this weekend has been rough on me, havent gotten to work on it any or the bronco.
