Another new project..........

just picked up this weekend:

1990 Eclipse GSX for 900$

Pro's:
Awd
4g63
all options (abs, sunroof, cruise control, etc)
AC works awesome
interior is one of the cleanest ive seen for a 17 year old car

Cons:
cracked windshield
skipped timing sending valves into pistons
cv boots need replacing
dented drivers front fender/broken headlight cover/top of headlight popup dented.

It runs, but its pretty horrid sounding, i had to trailer it back from san fran back to the central valley, let me tell you, towing a 3800lb vehicle with a 500lb trailer in a ***** **** 2006 Tahoe through the thickest parts of bay area traffic was enough to make the truckers that stop in at our work go "man, you got balls!"

friday night started the teardown of the head, timing looked ok but i wanted to take the head off anyways to install some ARP studs and a multi-layer head gasket so i can run up to 30psi without worry. NONE of the bolts we encountered have ever been removed, this car was definately never touched mod wise, still had all the crayon marks on all the hoses and bolts and they all lined up, so the teardown went pretty slow, had to use breaker bars on most of the bolts. a few of the exhaust manifold studs broke off in the head, so we had to keep the exhaust on when removing the head, meaning we had to take off the turbo to manifold bolts, and the one stud broke off, which made getting the head off tricky, but finally it came off.

i just ordered:
-Stainless Steel exhaust manifold studs
-SBR Cast Exhaust manifold (same one i had on the GST) since its 200$ and comes with the turbo gasket and manifold gasket, both a 50$ value, and the old manifold was cracked
-ARP Head Stud kit
-Mitsu Multi Layer Gasket

once i get it back running i need to smog it so i can register it, then i will fix the axles and windshield, and start gathering up all my support mods to run a GT35R.

and yes, i totally concur, it looks like a piece of ****. and it will stay that way for quite some time, that way cops wont pull me over since theyll feel bad i drive a POS.

yeah i dont know the actual weight, though the awd stuff alone weights 500lbs almost (rear, transfercase, etc). when people do the awd swap on a 2g spyder those are around the 3800 mark if i recall.

but the guy at the uhaul said the trailer weights 500lbs, cause when i dropped it off he was like "aight now drive it around and back it into its spot" and i was like "do i really have to? cant we just detach it and move it ourselves?" cause i suck at backing up trailers, "nope, that sucker weighs in at 500, good luck with that". i dont know how valid his accusation was but oh well.

just about. i sold the bike (some guy offered me 1300 for it so i was like "umm ok!" and sold my gear for another 400$) so i need something to tinker around with, and i already know basically everything about these cars. after its running i will prolly just build up like $3k and go ape**** with mods, so yeah, if i cut my frivolous spending that number will be in the bank in about 2 months, which means no coffee in the morning, no fast food for lunch.

getting it running reliably is the first goal though, i want to spend under 2k$ to get it road worthy and ready. i couldve bought one already running for around 1500$ but wheres the fun in that :dunno: plus finding one that has actually never been modded is a rarity, like ive always said, you dont want to buy someone elses mistakes.

nah only when you abuse them or ghetto rig parts. thats why right off the bat i want to fix/replace all the standard wear items and items most dsm'ers overlook, like cmon, arp studs and a head gasket? nobody does that for a first mod, but a month after getting the car cause they ran 20psi on a 17 year old car and then cried cause their head gasket blew. the dsm mantra is "Power, Reliability, Cheap, Pick two" you can have power and reliability but it wont be cheap, you can have power for cheap but it wont be reliable, or you can have reliability for cheap but it wont have power. because i never cheaped out on the GST the only time it was in the shop was for the time it got rear ended, the timing belt job (which i can now do myself) and the clutch (which i can also now do myself, but its a pita and i dont have patience for trannies), and the only time it was down was when it was getting built up. and its even better now, cause i can take my time knowing ill still have a car to drive to work, so i can do everything 110%.

Re: Another new project..........

too bad i have a 6bolt motor............ thatd hurt me if i had a 2g, 90-92 turbo dsm's have whats referred to as a 6bolt motor, stronger rods and better design than the 7bolt (92-99) that have walked, and even then, a good majority are only 7bolts from 95-96 and only in FWD form, nary a awd have walked. besides, the entire time ive belonged to the dsm site, ive seen 3 actual accounts of CW, all three were fwd 95-96 models. knew a guy who swore he had the walk, but it was his crank pulley separating. btw the guy who made the first pic with the silver gst now has a built 2.4l with a FP3065.

sucks now since its just a waiting game for parts. SBR has my order processing, but even if they get it out tomorrow itll be another week till it gets here. i might attempt the ABS delete, i hear alot of people have issues with the abs in the 1g's and delete it altogether, i dont know if i want to leave it just cause i havent driven a non-abs car since my 74 mustang which didnt have power brakes either. though tomorrow i might try to pull the dents on the drivers side fender and the top of the pop up headlight just so it looks a bit better at first glances.

**** found a fully built and ready head (new 3g revised lifters, rockers, ss valves, bronze guides, new oem mitsu springs/retainers, cams, cam gears, head planed/milled, head has been hot-tanked/cleaned up) in santa-cruz i might pick up this weekend and scrap the one i have now for 100$ or so bucks. for parts alone to do a full rebuild using mitsu OEM **** was like 400$ and the local shop wanted 150$ to clean/mill the head and do the install, and he wants 300$ and its already assembled ready to install. gotta love craigslist. i mean hell, 300$ for peace of mind knowing i have a head with basically 0 miles on it is pretty good, that way if there is any low compression, i KNOW its not the top end.

$300 for the piece of mind of knowing that you bought a head from someone you don't know. Someone who may have done the absolute worst job of rebuilding the heads imaginable.

If there is low compression, the heads would be the first place I look.

Re: Another new project..........

updates:

all parts are in and ready to go. the head was rebuilt by FFWD who specialize in built 4g63 top and bottom ends for both evo's and dsm's. i just finished swapping the cam seals over, installing the new manifold and tb gaskets as well as gave the manifold a nice cleaning. arp studs are installed on the block. with the arp stud and mitsu multi-layer steel head gasket combo, i can now safely run up to 30psi and possibly 500+hp if i can tune that far on the street. new sbr cast manifold has arrived as well as new exhaust manifold gaskets and turbo gasket.

the only downside is before ripping the head off, i never put the motor at TDC, so now i gotta have my buddy come over and re-time it from scratch.

im hoping it runs this weekend so i can get it smogged and registered/insured.

Re: Another new project..........

yeah got pretty far today. head is on, timing belt and everything else has been lined up and timed. got all the pulleys/belts on and ecu harness, and got to the injectors around 10ish and found one of them was missing the o-ring, so now if NAPA doesnt have any im ****ed until a dsm vendor can get them out to me. other than that its pretty much set and ready to roll, just gotta slap the intake back on, put the valve cover on, couple splash guards and hopefully good to go. i think had the injector o-ring not gone awol, we would have the car fired up by 11 at night. oh well, good thing about a project car is there is no need to hurry, unlike a dd if it sits another week, oh well.

Re: Another new project..........

****!

had the **** back together doing the last step to fire it up, adding coolant. But i overlooked the t-stat housing to head gasket and it led to my undoing. spewed water everywhere so i took it off and in doing so broke this little ****er

apparently its some sort of "Thermal Vacuum Valve", those are vacuum tubes that run air through there and i guess when it gets warm from the coolant the hotter air does something :dunno:. whatever the **** it does, its probably going to cost 90$ from the ****ing dealership, if they even have it. yeah, theres supposed to be two nipples, i broke one clean off.

btw in some fit of luck or a dsm god shining down on me, i found the missing injector seal chilling under my refrigerator wheel last night, which is what got me hopes up today.

btw some good news, its very possible i DONT have a 1990 GSX, because the vacuum diagram does not reflect a 1990 California version, the cali cars have a few differences in the vacuum crap, one of which is a Throttle body with 2 nipples and no charcoal canister, and i have a 4 nipple TB (same as 91-94) and a charcoal canister. plus if its a 91, it means i have the stronger 4bolt rear end. im gonna take my vin to mitsu tomorrow to make sure.

Re: Another new project..........

yeah but the DMV are ****tards, especially in cali. ive heard of cases where they just type in whatever car year you tell them on the new title when they send it to you after transferring without double checking. i mean hell, even with the bike i just told them it was a 1995 Kawasaki Ninja and she typed up from what i said to print out the new title and registration, probably could have said 96 Kawasaki and boom, i now own a 96, unless they really do check.

Oh btw

IT RUNS!

i just bypassed that little ****tard part for now, ooh my EGR wont work big ****ing whoopteedoo. though the part is on its way. 45$ for a little thing like that, retarded. oh well. now i just need new plugs, do a leak test, fix the CV joint and the window, and she'll be good to go.
