I can't find any #'s on his car except that he's only running 14 lbs of boost on 91 octane. Not to bad for such a low boost level.

Yes it is...because you don't drive a car that looks like ****...and you don't drive a car that sounds like ****. It is the same thing.

Since a car is not being built for NHRA, NMRA, etc...it doesn't have to have the most efficient power adder....in fact, it needs to have the power added that is going to make the owner of the car the happiest. Since, the owner may not like the idea of sounding like a jet going down the street with the gay *** BOV sound, and may prefer the ear piecing whining sound of a KB/Whipple twin screw...or the whine of a procharger...then, since that belongs to the owner, the owner will do what makes him the happiest...and sounding like *** is not going to fill that void.

So, take your holier than thou turbo *** and jump.

That's me...I'm entertaining for sure...just have my opinions and have a problem with just stating it.

Awesome. There is a company out there that is claiming their centrifigal blower is as efficient as a turbo... Let me go look for it. Wheel 2 Wheel used two of them on a pump gas Nova. Two blowers, LS based motor, 9's on pump gas, and looks like it really is 35 plus years old...

Re: KB GT500

Wastegates make the jet sound...and there are WG's that can vent to the atmosphere and those that vent through dampeners so it is not as loud.

But just like the whistle of SC, I like people to know what I have done, and don't mind the jet sound

Re: KB GT500

umm no, wastegates do not make the high pitched whistle you hear. have you ever heard a atmospheric dumped gate? it sounds like a dumptruck, or a runny fart with alot of air behind it. i think that sounds like complete ***, but sometimes it must be done case even the largest wastegates sometimes cannot keep up with the flow if youre trying to reroute it through the exhaust or downpipe.

heres a few links of atmospheric dumped gates......

Video - Ext. Wastegate dump

Video - Mk3 VW Jetta VR6 turbo acceleration with 40mm open wastegate

notice how the sound changes, the gate opens when the turbo hits its set amount of boost to let the exhaust by, and sounds like a butthole.

different turbos have different charecteristics, and make different sounds when they are at full steam. i love the whistle of a turbo as much as i love the whine of a blower. mitsu turbos (like 16g's or the like) sound like vacuum cleaners at full boost.

i think one of the guys at ForcedPerformance stated the different sounds are from a combination of shaft speeds, compresser wheels, compressor size, inlet size, the amount of air flowing through the turbo at the given moment.

Re: KB GT500

its the same thing. a jet sounds like a whistle. a wastegate sounds like a butthole because its basically open exhaust coming out of a 1" hole.

Here are a few more links of atmosphere dumped wastegates:

Putfile - Fly by 21

Putfile - Driving 2

Woops, these are vids of my car, I guess I do know what an atmosphere vent sounds like...

Superchargers whistle, Turbos make a turbine/jet sound, BOV's whistle, Wastegates blow.

Re: KB GT500

umm, last time i was at a airport, the sound of every airliner and the F16's taking off next door sounded like a high pitched whistle. watch top gun or go to your local airport if you dont know the sound a jet makes. it sounds like a high pitched whistle when it takes off. especially fighters, they scream down the runway.

your car sounded like a dumptruck, not a jet.

superchargers whine or moan.

turbos sound either like jets (high pitched whistle) or vacuums, again all dependent on its characteristics.

wastegates either sound like nothing (if theyre internal or go back into the exhaust) or sound like dumptrucks if externally gated. there is no whistle or jet sound made from exiting exhaust gases. period. the exception would be open exhaust after the downpipe and thats the sound of the air running over/through the exhaust turbine you hear, usually muffled by the pipes and exhaust gases.

bov's all sound different, my greddy sounded like a bird, my buddies mopar sounds like a sneeze (like my 1g bov in my current dsm), my other buddy has a hks ssqv that either flutters or sounds like a sneeze depending on what psi he is at when it goes off.

Re: KB GT500

So are you comparing the whistle of a SC to that of "whistle" of an atmosphere vented wastegate on a turbo? You made an excessive point about nothing...

When compared to the whistle of an SC, turbos DO NOT whistle, and jet engines sound like a giant hair dryer, not a giant kazoo. Take the hearing aids out, I think the frequency is messing with what you are hearing

Re: KB GT500

im not comparing a SC to anything. im saying your comparison of sounds are severly skewed.

a blower whines. if it whistles, you would see people on SVTperf. complimenting people on their blower whistle. instead, you see "dude i love teh whine!!zomg!"

a jet engine makes a whistle. it whistles when you are inside the plane. it whistles when they move around the tarmac and youre in the airport. whenever i make sounds of planes crashing, its a whistle followed by an explosion (usually my "Crash and Burn" imitation from Top Gun)

your car has a slight whistle as you do the driveby from the turbo spooling, just right before the wastegate opened cause you obviously hit full boost, after that, your car sounds like a dumptruck.

my buddies 60trim GST had a externally dumped wastegate. with the doors down, it whistled much like yours but once full boost was reached and the gate opened, it sounds like a dumptruck. with the windows up, you dont really hear the open dump at full boost, all you hear is the whistle of the turbo as your sucked into the seat.

heres a supra flyby that you can faintly hear the sound of the turbo right as it moves by the camera. try recreating that high pitched sound, guess how you will do it? with a WHISTLE!
Video - T51R Supra Flyby at 200mph+

anyways, the point is a wastegate moves exhaust. it does not make a whistle, or any noise other than sounding like crap, especially dumped.

lol, I guess all the people that say in person "Wow it sounded like a jet engine" or "It sounded like it was about to take off" were wrong. Their bad. Why the hell are even talking about this?

Oh and you know how you immitate the sound of an SC? By whistling.

i sure do, it doesnt involve whistling.

i wish i could find the movie of the supra guy doing the KB Cobra imitation. it sure in the hell wasnt no ****ing whistle.

found it

he does the "Vortech" with a whistle, but seeing a centrifugal is basically a pulley driven turbo............

however, his BLOWER sound of a KB Cobra isnt a whistle.

Re: KB GT500

lol, let me do a refresher of what the last page of this thread has been about so far:

1) Rob saying he prefers the sound of a supercharger to the "jet" sound of a turbo's BOV.

2) I said it is the wastegate that makes the jet sound he is referring to, not the BOV.

3) You say it is not the wastegate that makes a jet sound and randomly start talking about whistling because we all know wastegates makes sounds like that of an ***, and that turbos sound like whistles.

4) I am trying to figure out why you are telling me and Rob what we are actually supposed to be hearing is a whistle coming from a turbo instead of the jet sound that he does not like and that I do like...so if the wastegate is not making the sound we are all not hearing anyway, what is?

Re: KB GT500

basically now its about what sounds we think each make. which could go on for hours debating what sounds like what.

i think blowers whine, turbos whistle, bov's sneeze and dumped wastegates sound like dumptrucks. what you think matters not, ive been knee deep in turbos for the past 4 years, on various models, various setups, ive tuned them, ive done enough turbo swaps where i CAN do it with my eyes closed, as long as nobody hides the 14mm socket. youve had a turbo mustang for a year, and you probably have no idea even what kind of turbo it is, what the a/r is, nor what the airflow table looks like. your entire kit was prefabricated by a guy who thinks turbos make instant boost and superchargers have lag.

LOL! So do you feel better now?

Pt61 (or more commonly known as a T61 since it is a Precision Turbo and Precision places P's at the beginning of their part numbers) with a .81 turbine side and .60 compressor side, journal bearing.

Andy has been waste deep in turbos for 10 years and also tunes his own vehicles and I have now had to tune my own with his help because no one around here knows how. I like how that last sentence was entirely made up as well. If you would like to be wrong about something else besides this, you will have to wait until tomorrow because I am about to go to bed *sleepy*.
