he just started stating off how you believe in the religion that you were brought up in and made to believe. like he said, if we all lived in the greek/roman times, our gods would be Zeus, Hera and all that live on Mt. Olympus. we now live in a world mostly of christianity (1 god).
this is why we have religion:
one day, a man was walking amongst a starry night. he looked above, and couldnt help but feel so tiny and insignificant. to help himself grasp the fact that, he came to the though "there must be someone up there, looking down on me" so he created God, a belief in something other than himself, to help him feel more significant, like someone or something is out there, watching over him. later he spread his beliefs and helped just as many cope with this very same feeling, and religion was born. later this religion evolved many different ways, shapes and forms, throughout the ages and cultures.
i believe in destiny (Everything that happens, happens, and happens for a reason), afterlife/multiple planes of existence. i have a soul / life force / energy. when i die, my soul is set free, if it is mature, i may move on to another existential plane, if not, i may venture into another body (dolphin next life, they kick ***). i dont believe in a singular being that controls everything, even if he existed, i highly doubt he gives a **** about man-kind anymore, theres probably a way better form of life somewhere else, too much pain, death and destruction on humania to stick around and attempt a change. funny part is most of it, right now, is due to beliefs in god/gods. I dont need to believe there is an all-powerful being watching over me daily. i am that all powerful being, i watch over myself. why am i here? simple. my mom and dad had sex. no miracle there, just a sperm and an egg doing their thing, doing what evolution over the millions of years has perfected. i look up in the sky at night and hope in my next lifetime, i live in a world where the stars are more than a flat image in the sky, where each is a attainable destination. when i look up, i see a entire new era of civilization, with unlimited potential. do i feel insignificant? hell yes i do, but it doesnt bother me really.
the fact is, some people need to believe in something. some dont.
