My first bike was R6 before that I have never ridden a bike in my life, any bike is dangerous but if you can handle the power than go with a 600cc because I don't see a point in getting a 1000cc on public roads the 600s have plenty of power

Listen to this guy.. If you can respect the bike then start with a 600.. A 250/300 will get old/boring really fast, heh, unless you get a 250 2-stroke street bike
I suggest getting a slightly older bike as a starter, chances are you will drop it in the yard/driveway etc.. Most of us have/will..
If you do go with a new bike at least get frame sliders, fairings aren't cheap!!

Also agree 1000% that riding w/o wheelies is much more challenging and fun!

Also, I recommend 'a twist of the wrist 1&2' by Keith Code, they ARE the bible to keeping the shiny side up.. Keith owns and operate California Superbike school.. The leader in teaching technique. They are well worth the $20, I've read my copies over and over..
Good luck finding your bike! Can't wait to see pics!!

Na, I'm on the east coast. Any kind of riding instruction whether high performance or basic riding can be invaluable.
There's no replacement for professional instruction, friends and other riders can be helpful but a lot of times you'll get conflicting info.. Some instructors disagree on some things too but you'll get solid basics, Particularly helpful if you have little to no experience.
Personally I've been on or around bikes my entire life, pops dragged and road raced semi pro in the 70's-80's and owned a factory Kawasaki dealership. My great uncle drags professionally.
Never took any basic classes but plan on high performance instruction.
