PRIR annual Mustang Run

Well I just had the previledge of participating in this years PR annual Mustang Run of 2014. This was my first year to do so, as I just moved here to retire, and also have a 1999 GT to build and show off.

I was eager to be a participant for over a month now as I at that time became aware of this annual run. What I understand that was going to happen was a run around the whole island and have several stops inbetween to meet and greet and have others join in. But with the rain and storms predicted to hit, the stang run became a park and show. We ended up at the Puerto Rico Int'l Speedway. Every driver was given a free entry, all passengers had to pay 5 bucks. I would have to say there was over 2000 stangs that showed up from all over the island, I never saw soo many stangs in one place in my life. PRIR also decided to open its gates to our annual run and allow everyone the priviledge to the grounds and also they allowed all drivers to use the 1/4 mile track to test there setups and cars abilities. I have to say that the management calling in all its personel to work this event on days notice was wonderful, the personel at the track were at the least the best of hosts when it came to us asking to stay there for the day.

The morning started off with a show and shine and meet and greet. FRPP pitched a tent among other distributors that were running there cars also. They were scheduled to set up elsewhere at different check points along the run. Then around noon the track officials got the track cleaned up and ready for racing to all drivers and skill levels. If you had a stock car or 11 second car or worse, then no safety equipment was necessary. But if you had a 11 sec or better car, you had to have a helmet and proper belts and roll cage or bar. For the first hour it was started off with a tire burnout contest, then open track to whoever wanted to run. The first run was on the house at no cost. But, if you wanted to run more than once, it was $10.00 for unlimited runs there after. Some took advantage of that, and some took too much advantage of that, with results of breakage.

There was a 1997 SN95 black turbo big block there that stole the show, he ran a 7.01 at 199 mph. Man he was fast, then a 66 orange and silver fastback was second with a best of 9.01 at 178 mph. Most of the races were the coyotes, and the Shelby GT500's, plenty of those that took to the track, ranging from 13 - high 10's and 100 - 112 mph. I wanted to test my car and skills too, but the wife was worried that if something broke on the car by chance, we were going to be stranded, which is completely true and advice I ended up heeding to. Maybe next year.

I took the wife with me as she never has been to a race other than several Daytona 500 weeks pitching a tent or renting an RV on the outfield. She was in a mind set of being bored and not thinking that it was worth the trip. But after her seeing all the cars, and then the track opening up for racing, she was hooked. She was soooo stoked that it caught me by surprise. She did not want to leave. As soon as we got home, all she did was talk to her mom and sister of the good time and can't wait till next years run. Made my day just knowing she had a great time along with me and both of us together enjoying it, even after 20 yrs marriage under our belt together come this Dec.

Here are some pics I took. I ran out of space on my SD card so I took as many as I could. I took some race videos, but I do not know how to post those to the web. Getting old has it's down side sometimes.

Hope you all enjoy them.

This is AWESOME!!!
There are a lot of nice Mustangs in Puerto Rico! Who knew?
And WOW!!! A near 200 mph hour pass?!? That is some serious business!
I'm kinda diggin' the tubbed Pinto with the plexiglass hatchback and the New Edge interior.
Haha. And the Lotus was pretty random!

Next year, you'll have to make a contingency plan for a ride home so that you can run your Mustang without fear of a breakdown.
Glad you and your wife both had a great time!
Thanks for sharing Bill!

199 mph wow!
That Pinto is pretty nice, not digging the wheels to much.
Sounds and looks like your wife sure did have fun, better than Daytona haha. Hope next year you'll be able to run yours. Glad to hear both you and your wife enjoyed the time!
Thanks for sharing grump

The Pinto in my eyes was a piece of candy in thestore window for all to admire. There was a lot of time and careful effort to make that Pinto sweet. The interior alone was just one off. All tied into one sleek looking and powerful car.

Yes, next year we will make plans for the unfortunate breakage if it happens as I am going to run a few times down the track. And just to spend that time together with the wife and us both to have as much fun as we did, was the best. Just to hear her tell the story to her family put a hugh smile on my face for sure.

Actually Ron that rear glass was real glass. I had a double take of that too as I never really thought or recalled in our past glory days Pinto's having such a large rear pane. But when I went up to feel it, it was real glass indeed.

Yeah, up close they looked good tucked, they were actually Chip Foose Nitrous wheels. The car with the rims being soo big reminded me of those little toy cars you could get at Wal-Mart called Dubbed or something like that.

Yeah. It reminded me of one of those Hot Wheel cars I used to have when I was younger lol.

Don't know much of the Pinto other than my dad used to own one, talks about it a lot and how he wishes to have one again.

We used to use the Pinto's and Vega's for hot rodding as they were sooo light, pop in a lil 289 or 302 and you had yourself a fast lil hotrod. My first car at 15 was a 1972 AMC Gremlin X, with a 304 V8 and a torque flight transmission. That car might of been ugly to look at, but let me tell you, I used to blow the doors off of camaros and the like. That car screamed down the road. I remember buying my first set of Cragar SS rims and some fat 60 series tires, and used to smoke those tires like butter. That car got me soo many tickets as a young kid with a V8 light wt car. All of my towns police officers used to pull me over just to see if I had a valid license from all the tickets that car got me. Those were the days

And don't forget the Monza's that had an available 350 from the factory!
I always thought that the Gremlins were cool. One of my neighbors had a Tunnel Rammed 289 Pinto hatchback.

I miss those days. The cars were, comparatively, slow by todays standards but it was a great time to be into cars!
The town that I grew up in, Salinas, had one of the famous "cruises" in California. People would come from all over the state to roll up and down Main street (about 1.5 miles long) and show off their rides... EVERY Friday and Saturday night. It was bumper to bumper and took about a half hour in each direction. Haha. "Brake stands and Blowers" were the rule of the day. And the cops running around like chickens with their heads cut off!
Those WERE the days!!!

The city made Main street into a "No cruising zone" in the late 80's...

Ron we used to have the same thing in Clearwater Florida. The beach used to be the happening thing every weekend. A cruise up and down the blvd. The strip I would guess is about 1.5-2 miles and then you would make a u-turn and do it all over again, again, again. But after yrs of this going on the local politicians thought it to be a annoyance to the tourists and a turn off. So they made it illegal to cruise the blvd. The cops would sit at the corners of intersections, and if they saw your car more than 2 times on that blvd they would pull you over and ticket you for disturbing the peace ordinance. And yes, those days are long gone in most areas on the map.

We used to ride along with my Dad and his 67 Shelby GT500 around town, have a local meet and greet at the local drive-in diner. Eat in the backseat of the car with a tray hanging off the door sill with food and drinks. Then ppl would line the streets and have a drag race or two against a friend or foe. Then go back to the diner and talk about the run. Aggghhh, those were indeed happier days. You worked hard, and then you played hard. Life was much simplier and more enjoyable. Everybody knew everybody, and the gossip hit the streets faster than facebook. Pretty soon ppl would approach you and ask you about this and that. We had facebook back then, it was called face to face conversations. And we had twitter too, it was called going to the local hangout every friday and saturday night, or if we were lucky, a concert or two.
