Building Sound System...Input requested

Ok, I am looking at putting some upgraded sound into the car since I need to run wires to the trunk for the battery soon anyhow. Figure I may as well run all the wires at the same time.

The general idea is going to be to run 1 12" sub in the trunk, components in the front doors, and mids in the rear panels. I will have 1 amp for the components and mids and 1 amp for the sub. The sub will be mounted in the spare tire well like they did on Overhaulin last night. Kicker put a 12" solobaric in there, so it can be done and it looked clean.

I am contemplating running dynomat throughout the car as well. It will at least be in the trunk, but I am thinking of running it under the carpet in the car as well. Not sure yet there through. All of this will be run off of an eclipse head unit. I really want to keep the stock 6 disc, but, I think the sound quality of the eclipse overrides the in dash 6 that is prone to jamming.

Here is what I am thinking for parts so far. I am fond of kicker, so that is what I have picked out so far.

S12L7 (12" Solobaric L7)
KS6.2 Components
SSMB6 Mids
SX700.4 digital 4 channel amp. 175 watts x 4 @ 2 ohm
SX650.1 digital mono sub amp. 650 watts x 1 @ 2 ohms
Eclipse CD5435 or CD8455 head unit

I am thinking of doing this all early next year when I run the battery to the trunk. I think I will be putting in the convertible light bar at the same time as well since I will have the rear interior panels off anyhow. Might as well kill all those birds with 1 stone.

So, any input/thoughts/comments?

Re: Building Sound System...Input requested

I dunno kyle...I used to believe that till the current speakers I have in my car. If they hit any harder it'd be busting windows and I'm only running a 760 watt amp.

Now then, onto the stereo. Rob, I will make you a spare tire well box from fiberglass if that's what you're wanting, it looks extremely clean. Now..where do you want the amps mounted? Custom amp rack, hidden...etc. Onto the headunit, I'm running the 2004 model 5423 and I must say, Eclipse is the way to go. Kicker amps are good, great pick on those. All in all, great setup man, it's gonna sound killer, just let me know if ya want any help installing any of this, be more than happy to help.

Re: Building Sound System...Input requested

I have an idea... it's what I thought about doing to mine. Remove the spare tire, and drop a 15" in there.... then, near the corners on the sides, there's a natural pocket, fill those with some 10's, and then 2 - 12's in the a-typical place... and then find some massive amps.

Question:
Should I go with a 2 oHm sub or a 4 oHm sub?

Not sure on the amps. Since there will only be 2, I may just mount them on the floor on either side of the sub in some equal angled way. As for the box, I may go fiberglass, but I am not sure. I am almost thinking of keeping it low key and putting down a thin floor in the entire trunk and just running carpet over top of it. Still haven't decided on that yet though.

As for the install, I may just take a road trip over there and have you help me do the install for 2 reasons. 1 - I have no idea how to do it. 2 - We may do the under hood finishing I talked about and also paint the end caps of the amps the same color to match the car.

As for those that have heard the crappy sounding wheel well boxes, my thought is that they weren't built with the proper requirements for the subs. Kicker did the install on overhaulin, and I can't imagine them installing something that will sound ****ty in a car that is going to have their name on it for the next year at a number of car shows (a requirement of getting your car overhauled). I am going to make sure to talk with some "experts" on the proper dimensions to make a box for the well and see what they say. I have plenty of time on this though as it won't be until Spring at the earliest. What I have listed above is $2200 worth of equipment before buying the head unit which should run about $500 or so. It will take some time to squirrel that money away.

Re: Building Sound System...Input requested

Dude...I went to a car show today, won best in class for stereos. I turned my stereo on when they first came up, not real loud. The only other real competition was a dude in an ex cab toyota with a L7 12 in a big box on his back seat so I wasn't real worried. They came back by again later saying it was close...so I reached in, turned my subs up to 16, cranked it a good ways up and they couldn't talk to each other in front of my car anymore...needless to say, I won lol.

O yeh...and I need dynamat. My rear bumper was about to vibrate off, trunk lid was moving a good half inch to an inch. Spoiler was bending, etc etc lol. It was great.

how many watts are you pushing? I've got 1200, and stuff vibrates, but not like that.

1 5000T 760 watt pioneer amp. I could put one of those on each speaker..but it's plenty loud enough now.

Re: Building Sound System...Input requested

I'll put it this way..I only have 1 760 watt amp on my subs...they're rated at 1000 a piece and I can't sit in the car with the sound up loud...

Re: Building Sound System...Input requested

hahaha, it all depends on what people want brandon. I went through the big stereo phase, now I'm more into the quality of sound, but it will still get up and bump when I want. The first time they came over and checked out my stereo, I had it setup for quality, not just bass...then I realized they wanted bass, so I turned down the mids and highs, and just cranked the bass up lol. I like having a really good overall system, just adds to the joy of driving the car to me.
