Mach 460 Sound System help

Ok, i have a 2001 V6 convertible with a Mach 460 sound system, all stock except for a Sony head unit. My front two door speakers do not work at all, one front tweeter works, and the rear speakers work (but do not play any bass at all).

I went to an audio store and they told me i cannot just replace the speakers (they would sound bad he said), i would have to bypass the stock amp and run the wires directly to the head unit. Can anyone confirm that.

Im thinking that my amps have gone bad though because the front speakers dont work and the back have no bass.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You can't replace the speaker with just any speakers because of the Ohms I believe, if you do, all you will get is bass coming out and nothing else. You really only have 2 choices, rip everything out and start from scratch or replace everything from Ford. My front lower door speakers are out due to a bad amp. Once I get my 2004 paid off, I am going to replace everything because I love the Mach. I don't need anything that you can hear from down the street. Everything is very over priced from Ford and I have been unable to find any used parts on Craigslist or on this forum. Hope you have better luck than I did.

Im not looking for anything crazy either, just something that plays with SOME bass! By replacing everything do you mean all six speakers and both amps? Ive also tried looking for a complete mach 460 replacement, no luck.

This sucks "/

Re: Mach 460 Sound System help

I believe the Mach set up runs on 3 ohms, which is why you have to either replace every component, or keep every component.

Re: Mach 460 Sound System help

Ok so today I took out my back seat and unplugged both amps. Nothing happened after that so im guessing the amps are bad and the front speakers are bad because the back speakers play but only play highs and mids, no lows.

If your going to replace everything, its actually 4 subs, 2 mids, 2 tweeters, and 2 amps in your car. You cant mix anything, aftermarket speakers and stock amps wont work or stock speakers and aftermarket amps wont work either. You can replace all those components or start from scratch. Also you cant buy just 1 amp from ford, they sell them as a bundle. Its like $275 for both

My grandpa works at a Ford bodyshop. He is going to bring home an amp and a front speaker just so i can test them and try to narrow down what is wrong. Ill post once i know more.

Hopefully i can just replace the front two speakers and/or the amps in the back with used mach 460 equipment.

Thanks for all the replies!

Brent - You got an '03 GT? I've been away for too long.

To the O.P. - You can certainly replace the speakers and most likely it will sound fine, although I would stay away from Sony. It's possible that the head unit is installed incorrectly.

Ford OEM speakers tend to run between 3-4 Ohms while aftermarket speakers measure in at ~4 Ohm. This just means the speakers put up less resistance to the electrical (i.e. audio) signal.

Unplugging the amp doesn't really do anything, of course by unplugging it you are not going to get anything out of the speakers. If a light bulb was out and you unplugged the lamp and tried turning on the light then would you expect the bulb to light?

Most likely the amp is bad and needs to be replaced.

Re: Mach 460 Sound System help

hey bud, i have a 96 gt with the mach sound. i bought this car used and the audio did not work. after hours of checking i confirmed that the main amp was defective. i found a way to bypass the amp. find your wiring diagram for that system and you should be able to hard wire your aftermarket stereo direct to your base speakers. the mach will not function but you will have quality sound without the extra bass. if you are not capable a audio specialist should be able to pull it off.

I believe there is an amp for the front of the car in the dash under the cd player! Along with the two amps in the rear of the car!

Re: Mach 460 Sound System help

It doesn't matter much on the ohm's either I've got 8 ohm speakers in mine and they sound great with the mach 460 amps and a jvc head unit.

My last 2 mustangs had the Mach 460 sound system except for a pioneer head unit. All I had was problems with all the speakers! While it was under warranty I kept taking it to the dealer and made them replace the speaker that went out. I think they saw me once every 2 weeks! Once it was out of warranty I ripped out. I have not replaced the head unit in my 2011 GT yet, but when I do if I have problems the systems getting yanked out also.

Re: Mach 460 Sound System help

The main problem with any ford that has a factory amp is that when you put an aftermarket stereo in it, it will over power the amp causing the speakers to blow or the amp to burn up. A factory mach 460 or any other ford radio with a amp only puts out 15 watts out the back of it, and an aftermarket may put out 50 watts but this depends on the radio.

My aftermarket jvc has a low and high amp setting inside the radio, if I run it on high as soon as I turn it up to 3 its loud. But when I have it turned on the low setting I can turn it up all the way and it doesn't distort any at all. So that being said, Just remember that when you blow an amp in your ford and don't know why it happened.
