Tape problem

I own a 1999 mustang. I tried using the auxiliary tape adapter that I purchased from Walmart but every time I insert it into the tape deck, it ejects the tape and says error on the radio. I want to keep everything oem in my mustang so I would rather not have to change the radio in order to be able to play music from my phone. Any help is greatly appreciated!
