About to loose my mind with SYNC!

I have tried everything I can think of to get my USB recognized so that I can (ironically) update the software to fix bugs like the USB but have failed at every corner. I tried formatting my memory card as FAT and FAT32, tried pulling the SYNC fuse (#3) for about 20 min, using the "install app" option instead of the autorun, even yelling USB!!! to it but still nothing. I either get "No USB" or "USB Empty". Anything I haven't tried??

I was unable to update my Sync until I tried another, higher quality, USB drive. I went out and bought a brand new Sandisk drive and it worked the first time after many failed attempts with a different no-name USB stick.

I've also did the master reset but nothing. I am however using a micro SD in a USB carrier - but as long as its the right FAT32 format that shouldn't matter right?

I would definitely try again with a good quality USB drive, not an SD card.

Damn. I was hoping to avoid the cost of getting another one of these things. They are cheap sure, but I don't even have to buy peripherals to update my computer! Cmon Ford...

I've found that using a 1gb USB works the best. You can take a larger one and create a smaller 1Gb partition. That should work as well.

The raxiom retains the sync. I recommend a complete aftermarket

The raxiom basically ads a fancy interface. It doesn't change the radio or add functions other than nav and a back up camera.

At least two manufacturers make replacement units that will retain steering wheel controls and offer CarPlay which is what will be available with Sync 3, but not available for older models.

Is the backup camera hard to install?

Check out crutchfield.com and do a search for carplay.

Ok. Just did the sync update, on the 3rd USB drive (ironically the one I actually made myself) it finally found the files by navigating through a convoluted series of buttons on the radio. I followed the directions from this forum and another but wouldn't work. The download took 26 min using a 128 mbyte drive formatted fat32 (USB 1.1 fat32 drive I made).

I know this really isn't that helpful but it does seem to be USB dependent. I can tell you the microcontroller I used in my USB drive when I built it was a very popular one that is used by many manufacturers of USB drives.

Keep trying. It will eventually work.
