Airbag Question

If I take my airbags out of my car, to sell them, then buy new ones. Will the check engine light come on, and if so is that the only thing that would go wrong with the car till I get my new air bags

Isn't there a Black steeting wheel already in production by Ford? Why dont you just replace the steering wheel?

If he buys the complete fr500 steering wheel (which would cost a pretty penny) it will come with the airbag... I'm almost sure of it.

Besides... wouldnt some Black Vinyl dye do the same thing?

does it?

i've always seen it in magizines pictured with the air bag, but its only like 199 everytime i see it, so iam like it cant come with an air bag.

How much is the complete one?

Now that I went looking for it... I doubt you could get the complete wheel from anywhere but Ford directly. and they'll rip you a new one for it. I found it for 169.99 w/o the Airbag.

Vinyl Dye might work. I honestly dont know the durability of it.

DONT MESS WITH YOUR BAGS!!!!! I AM TELLING YOU THIS TO SAVE YOUR LIFE. IF YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOUR DOING THEY WILL BLOW IN YOUR FACE. I HAVE SEEN IT DONE. If you do anything, paint or dye it. also IF you would sell your car, or trade it in U will not be able to, the dealership will give you nothing. here is some pics, that car is a 98 Ford Taurus, and that bag was under water, from a flood, but it still went off. we took it out to see how far it would go up in the air. from the ground it went up about 30' .

If you disconnect your battery then your air bag wont deploy. Airbags are easy to remove, I mess with mine all the time. I dont know about the dye tho, mines painted black to match, but if you look hard enough you can tell its not the same color black. The only thing you have to worry about is the wires. If the wires arent the same color then the airbag will deploy. When you take out your old one and put the new on in, connect the battery and let it sit for about 20 minutes so that the computer can reset. Then turn the car on and pray it doent blow your face off. Good luck.

"The inflation zone extends out at least 18 inches from the cover of this “loaded” airbag. Just because the airbag has been “cut off” doesn’t mean it is completely safe." "Stay clear … stay safe!" (RONALD E. MOORE
University of Extrication Editor)
http://www.nhtsa.org/airbags/stills/

Look when you do anything to your car, be safe. I Will tell you not to change your bags, or even touch them. if you really want a diffrent look, then go to a dealer or a shop that will chage them for you. that keeps you safe, and if anything happens then it wont happen to you.

I don't know if Charles has worked many wrecks but when I go to a wreck with air bags not deployed we cut battery wire for precaution. Air bag is still armed and will still deploy if something happens. I have been at the scene when an air bag went off while rolling the roof on a bmw...not pretty. Metal goes everywhere. But seriously, don't mess with your air bags...not safe at all. One of those things worth paying someone who knows what they're doing to mess with it. Just my experience.
P.S. my air bags went off in feb when I hit a tree at 4 mph...scratched my bumper...air bags went full force. Don't mess with em

I wasn't sure how heavy rescue ran there, sorry bout the assumption lol. But yeh, always assume it can and will go off. Thing that is really starting to bother me is how cars are going to the side curtain bags with air bags in the b pillar...not good for popping doors or rolling roofs, they're gonna have to put an over ride somwhere on these new cars or we're going to have problems...

hey low, sorry did mean to jump on ya, ahaha Yeah we run a Heavy rescue. RESCUE CO 91, "Rescue 91
1995 Saulsbury Heavy rescue on a Freightliner chasis.
This truck is used mostly for automobile extrications and fire scene air and lighting, but also carries equipment for special operations rescues." (www.fishers.in.us) Also we run "Operations 93
Truck and Trailer Special rescue equipment. Carries specialized tools for
trench, confined space, rope and other unusual rescue situations." Also the rescue is a walk-in. we are in the process of spec. a new E-one/Saulsbury walk-in kinda like rescue 1-5 @FDNY.

Ha much better than us...full size blazer 4x4 for rescue 1 (not much equipment on it), yellow box truck for rescue 2 (loaded with everything), and f450 supercrew for rescue 3. If I had any pictures of them I'd put em all up. Yellow box truck is the best, just stands out lol.

Airbags have a supplemental power system in case the battery gets destroyed or disconnected in an accident. They will still deploy with the battery disconnected or removed.

I also read that the car will still hold a static charge that will set it off. Not sure.

Fish, saw on a new report of where on firefighter was getting someone out of the car, his head was right next to the dashboard, air bag set off at 200MPH.

your brake has noting to do with the bags, (well they do cause they will stop you ) but if you have ABS like mine does then "pumping" the break is a big no no.

I think he means to drain all the residual electricity in the car so the SRS sensor won't fire. Which you should do anytime you need to disconnect the battery to work with a car's electrical system.

But, still. Most SRS have a supplemental power system which will still allow the airbags to deploy.

Even without a battery or a supplemental power system... -Any-... And I do mean any... Voltage across the SRS sensor lines will deploy the air bags. It's just not a good thing to work on.
