Cool New member from California

It's almost midnight on New Years Eve and here I am posting on a Mustang forum. Pathetic! No worries, I'm old, married and partied out!

I'm not a traditional 5.0 guy. My current project car is an '89 LX convertible powered by a turbo'd 2.3. The motor is built and I'm forcing air with a T3. Haven't dynoed it yet but I'm expecting in the 350 hp range.

My daily driver is an '86 Thunderbird TurboCoupe with a turbo'd 4 cyl and my next project is a '27 Model 'T' roadster that awaits in the backyard, powered by, you guessed it, a turbo'd 2.3!

Happy New Years!

Cool Re: New member from California

Haven't made it to the BAR referee yet but I should be OK. The motor is built to the same smog standards as an '89 Merkur XR4ti. California smog law states 'a replacement engine must be the same year or newer than the actual car'. It also is required to be the same make as the car. The '89 XR4ti is a factory 2.3 turbo setup, manufactured by Lincoln-Mercury which is a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company. I have a functioning EGR valve and EGR shutoff valve, as well as a charcoal canister purge line, fuel return line and functioning PCV with a one-way check valve plumbed inline. It should burn clean, function properly and pass all their visual inspections.

Re: New member from California

DEFINITELY nice

Let me know how the meeting with the ref goes - and I'd be very interested in learning more about the ability to swap in a newer motor, assuming it is using the smog devices originally equipped to said motor.

Whereabouts do you live?

Cali = the nazis of cardom..

You can pass a sniffer test with better than factory results, but you will fail, hard, for any visual 'tampering' or non carb-approved parts

They also have rolling smog check stations. Literally, with a portable dyno and all

I'm up in Santa Rosa. I've still got a few things to do before I go see the ref. Exhaust, front end alignment, finish interior, etc but I'll post after I'm done.

I have to use the XR4ti ruse because turbos weren't offered on Mustang 4 cyls after '86 although they were offered on T-Bird's through '88. Mine however, is an '89 and Fords final turbo offering, in any form, was on the '89 XR. I just squeaked by!

I don't see much of a problem if you're swapping into your '01. You could probably get away with just the '01 smog system.
