First Post

Posted this under the V6 section as well...

First Post - considering a 98 3.8 mustang (Auto trans)for my son (16). He fell in love with it. The car is in really nice shape. All original paint in nice shape, no accidents, minimal door dings and rock chips. Interior like new w/ exception of small tear in drivers seat. Everything works: AC, PW,PL, AM/FM Cassette/CD(stock).

It does need tires, probably an alignment and they owner said the rear main is leaking a bit.

Problem: 230K miles. w/ no major work on engine or tranny.....anything can happen with that kind of miles....should I (he) go for it?

Don't want to see him wasting his summer job money needlessly

Re: First Post

first off welcome.

I would say to look for a car with less miles. that car might last another ten years or ten months. you just don't know. just really depends on how good of a deal your getting on the car.

Re: First Post

Welcome! That's a hefty bunch of miles and could soon lead to major problems. That depends on how much the car is. I would say as I told somone eairler buy an 01-04 Taurus LX, or SE with less than 150k miles. It's a great first car. it will get him some driving experience and leave some more $$ for a Mustang later on, like senior year of High School.

Welcome to the site

You may want to look for something that has less on the odometer. it could last 5 years or 5 days, you just don't know. It really depends on how it was maintaned

Re: First Post

you can find a much lower mile car for a good price, I would rather have a 99+ due to the 190hp vs 150 plus... the manual trans will give you less issues and be easier to upkeep/work on (if they dont know how to drive a manual is quite easy)

the 3.8L is an easy to work on push rod engine so rather cheap on upkeep

Re: First Post

welcome

I personally would pass on that stang, unless you could pick it up for a few hundred bucks...then it might not be too bad if it does decide to have major issues down the road.

Just remember, there are plenty of mustangs out there...v6's and GT's for very cheap. I'd also go with the 99+ if you're thinking v6, the hp/tq difference is well worth it. A 94-98 GT wouldn't be too bad, but a manual v8 may not be the best 1st car for someone, but that's up to you guys

Re: First Post

welcome! glad to see someone else getting a Mustang as their first vehicle..

i have to agree with the rest, I would pass on it. Mustangs are too plentiful to settle for something with that many miles. Another Mustang will come along that he will like just as much, if not even better. 99-04, FTW
