Thought I'd Start Here

First Mustang, just bought it to replace a totalled Miata that my son was driving. Luckily I have another Miata, but this Mustang should be better for us as its a little bigger and more forgiving than the MX5.

2002, V6 convertible, yellow with white top and interior. Looks like two previous owners and driven lightly but has 145,000 on it. By "lightly" I mean not aggressively. Everything stock. Just changed plugs and wires.

Next are shocks, struts and springs. I need some RX7 or Miata handling on this thing. I joined here because the articles are great and the instructions are clear! Looking for the same quality of instruction as Miata.net "garage". Great insight on both these forums.

Wow, let me catch my breath and thank you all for the almost instantaneous responses.

I've already been making myself loved on a posting about racing a Miata with a mustang The hate will flow as I am opposed to street racing and ventured that opinion

But owning a Miata among other things, I felt qualified to respond!!

Ya...we got some cry babies when the mere mention of a race so try to keep it hypothetical. And ya. Welcome

Welcome. You're gonna have to stiffen it up a bit. Subframes, sway bars, springs, shocks. Wheels and tires. Power mods after.

Been done before and from what I've seen there not to hard to do either. I'm planning on doing it to a miata eventually.

Re: Thought I'd Start Here

welcome! if its not up in the articles section just post up and I am sure we can walk you through just about anything. You can get great handling out of the Mustang, just gotta do a few key things to get started (subframe connectors (MUST be full length weld in), springs, shocks/struts, wheels/tires, lower/upper control arms, bushings)

Re: Thought I'd Start Here

Thanks for the replies. I've got both a Miata left and a couple of RX7's so the handling is not comparable. The Mustang loses out on those counts, but is a unique experience in and of itself.

I'm going to concentrate on handling upgrades as opposed to speed. If I want faster, I'll think about getting a V8 though I've got the vette for that, really. And an upgrade to an LS1 in a Miata or RX7 is a helluva upgrade!!! I'm just thinking proper tool for the job and a V6 mustang is never going to be fast, but it may be made to handle better I would think!

Thanks Spector for the information on the handling upgrades. I've been looking at the subframe connectors as the first step based on your analysis. The welding bothers me simply because I have to get someone to do it. I'm not good with welding. So that could add considerably in terms of expense. Welding doesn't come cheap!
