Tire size comparison for 17s (sidewall wise)

My friend is running my OEM 17 inch cobra rims with 275/40/17 tires all around. If you do the math vs the stock 08 GT tires for 17 inch rims you end up with my tires being .50 shorter overall (.25 smaller sidewall).

He has a tuner so fixed it... and it makes it look like it has 18s honestly vs 18 inch with the normal tire size I see on 05+ mustangs.

Here is a pic for you to see for yourself.

Re: Tire size comparison for 17s (sidewall wise)

Actually it's more like an inch-and-a-half difference. 275/40-17s measure 25.6"; stock S197 235/55-17s measure 27.1". My aftermarket 255/45 and 285/40-18s measure 27 inches in diameter fitted to 18x9 and 18x10 wheels. S197 factory 17s and 18s measure out at 27.1", so I don't know what you mean by your "18s honestly vs 18 inch with the normal tire size I see on 05+ mustangs" statement.

Re: Tire size comparison for 17s (sidewall wise)

the overall height of a 275/40/17 vs a 235/55/17 is 38.5mm or 1.5 inches but you have to remember thats top/bottom so the car will only be 1.5/2 lower than stock as half the height is at the top. I forgot the original measurement i guess thinking it was only .5 not .75 lol.

What I meant by the final statement you had a question with is~ if you have a set of 18 inch rims on an 05+ mustang with the OEM (27.1 inch tall tire) the rims look smaller due to the amount of sidewall they require. If you drop it down by .75 inches sidewall it looks much cleaner/better to me. Say a 275/35/18 on an 18x9 rim would look good on a 05+ it would be the amount of sidewall I have... but the car has to be lowered.

Re: Tire size comparison for 17s (sidewall wise)

You'll have to excuse me; old age slows me down once in awhile. I understand what you were getting at now about the 18s. Not trying to argue about this, but the 18 inch factory tire sidewalls would be shorter than 17s due to the extra inch of rim diameter. My sidewalls are noticably shorter than my factory 17s were. Anyway...I do like some sidewall; I hate the rubber band look.
