Exhaust system tips

New to the world of Mustangs and have many questions about exhaust systems. I have been searching and listening to many sound clips of exhaust systems and I am trying to decide which way to go. Right now I am curious about the SLP loudmouth axle back. Can you give me some input on the power gains from it and if you had heard in person how loud is it? Will have a problem with the police because of the noise? Been trying to see who has one in my area with no success.

Re: Exhaust system tips

Running a SLP system is about like running just a resonator. It really does nothing to muffle the exhaust unlike an actual muffler. It will be loud and you will be heard lol.

All about what you are wanting to listen to everyday. Personally I love the wake the dead loud systems. o/r X with single chamber flowmasters here

Re: Exhaust system tips

Yes SLP will be loud. I'm runnin Macboomtubes and they are LOUD......but I guess my kooks LTs don't help much, lol. I heard the magnaflows and ford racing axelbacks are a lot quieter.

Just my wife. I had a cop behind me earlier today and he didn't say anything. I also didn't get on it with him back there though lol

Re: Exhaust system tips

Keep in mind that SLPs sound best with the stock catted H-pipe. I have heard SLPs in person. I have heard slps with the stock catted H in person. I am not too sure what to think. It's loud but not overly loud. I am not too crazy about the overall tone.

Re: Exhaust system tips

SLP sounded great on my `03 MaCh1. :burnout: I still like the Borla stingers on the S197-not too obnoxious-but a really nice exhaust note-and don't resonate inside the car too bad either. `Being from Katy still entitles you to a welcome..

Re: Exhaust system tips

Decided to get Flowmaster axle backs (American thunder), maybe headers soon after. Thinking about a complete cat back system.

Re: Exhaust system tips

Complete Cat back will have way more benefits and if you can go ahead and get some more of the exhaust done (LT headers, mid pipe) then you will have one of the very basic foundations for the rest of your mods.

I don't know of axle backs do much, especially on the S197 (HP wise).

Re: Exhaust system tips

The only thing that adds significant power in regards to the S197 system is L/T headers.

Re: Exhaust system tips

Got Flowmaster axle back exhaust and sounds great. I will replace the pipes from the cats to the mufflers later. Not looking for more power, those days are over for me, I just want to get that great Ford sound from my exhaust.

Re: Exhaust system tips

Don't know much about the Mustang exhaust, but learning something new every day. Loving the sound of the flowmasters, noticed that on some bends in the exhaust there are flat spots especially above the rear end. How much is the exhaust being affected by this?

Not much. Just keep your over the axle pipe (the one that goes from the midpipes to the axlepipes). Getting new OTA will not net you more power or change the sound.

I meant as far as exhaust. Shorties are debatable, but getting a new over the axle pipe (OTA) is useless.

I meant add the tune along with the LTs for even better results.

Re: Exhaust system tips

There is a guy here in Houston that builds custom stainless steel exhaust. Did some work on my brothers M3 and it sounded pretty good. Works mostly on Vettes but I don't see why he couldn't do a mustang.

Re: Exhaust system tips

My son is wanting to start upgrades to his '09 V6 mustang with a cat-back system. It seems a popular option is to order a pair of quality mufflers and then have a shop pair those with H or X pipes. Next popular option I've read is to order a cat-back system and have a shop install it or hopefully, if it's a bolt on system, put the car up on stands and do it ourselves.
His goal is to not get as loud as possible but just get as close to a Shelby/GTV8 sound without the droning inside. Ultimately, he'll add CAI and possibly a programmer.
I've read that the interior droing noise is an issue with Pypes and some other brands. I was also told by a local dealer who sells Magnaflows that the flowmasters were not as reliable (?).
Money is an object, so we may not be buying the Borlas.
The other item is to possibly have a shop cut out the exhaust notch so we don't have to pay for, paint, and install a new bumper cover.
We live near Beaumont, TX.
Thanks for any help!

My bad. Should have read it again. I am kinda surprised, most muffler/exhaust shops push flowmasters.

Re: Exhaust system tips

I personally like flows and have had them on all my ponys until the 05 and 07.I would still like to try a pair of 40's just to see if I like the sound.

Re: Exhaust system tips

I had Flow 40 series on my 06. Keep your boomtubes. The flows droned just as much if not more than my magnapacks. They sound good at idle but are relatively quiet at WOT.

Re: Exhaust system tips

I appreciate the comments. So my quest now is to try and determine which cat-back system provides a significant upgrade in sound (without disturbing the neighbors while driving normally) and is best at not causing the dreaded interior droning noise. All of this is for a '09 V6.

Please provide your choices>

Re: Exhaust system tips

I have the FRPP Stingers on my 08 (same thing as Borla, different emblem) and they sound great.. nice low rumble at idle but not at all obnoxious, but when you get on it they're roarin' but with a nice sound as well

I'm not sure if they make 'em for a v6 though :/

Re: Exhaust system tips

So, we found a muffler shop with a great reputation for mods in Deer Park, TX (near Houston). They will cut the Y mid-pipe out of my son's V6, add a stainless pipe to the driver's side with an "H" pipe connection, cut the rear bumber for the driver's side exhaust tip and install a pair of mufflers and tips of our choice (within a certain price range) for $450 total.
He's giving us mufflers like Magnaflows, Cherry Bombs, Flowmasters to choose from plus he has plenty of GT and/or Shelby mufflers (which he says are basically the same thing). We're planning on going with the Flowmaster 40's.
I found a couple of statements from Flowmaster's website that I would like comments on:

Quote:
Flowmaster does not recommend replacing factory single inlet exhaust systems with a "true dual" system on computer controlled vehicles. The computers in most late model vehicles may not be able to compensate with the fuel needed when increasing the exhaust flow, and may void your factory warranty and emission compliance.
Quote:
The 50 series (moderate to mild) incorporates an internal tuning chamber that helps reduce interior sound level in the cab area of your vehicle, and provides a slightly milder exterior tone than the 40 series. The 40 series (aggressive) will generally resonate or “drone” inside the vehicle, around 1800-2000 rpm and again, around 2400-2600 rpm. The performance characteristics of the 40 and 50 series are the same, so it’s simply “a sound decision”.
Comments?
