Best of 2005 to 2009?

I want to buy my first Mustang: a 2005 to 2009 GT convertible, V8, auto.
I've got some money coming from a motorcycle crash insurance settlement. I was riding my 2 month old Harley FXDL and an idiot ran a red light. The bike was totalled. I had 10 months of physical therapy.
Do you guys have any warnings or favorites among those years?
Anything to look for or watch out for?
The 2010 has many nice upgrades and power increase. Is it worth it?
2011 will have more power, but have that new vehicle price tag.
How would I get the most for $25,000.00?

I think in your case if you buying one that is pretty much stock the newer the better but if you see some in great shape that may have a supercharger or something go for it.

if you like the 99-04 body style then you can have a car with 425hp/tq stock with a built engine that can take 600-650rwhp on the STOCK engine and have money to mod it with left over (supercharged from the factory). If you are intrigued let me know (03/04 cobra click pics in sig to see what the car looks like).

If you plan to stick with the 05+ body style they dont go over 450rwhp without needing the engine built to take the power (300hp stock and no supercharger), but they do have a better chassis and they have a different style that some like more. Just giving you options so you dont regret it later on.

You can a great deal on that body style to. Look around and look at them carefuly. Make sure to get a history report.

Re: Best of 2005 to 2009?

One thing to look for in a S197 Mustang is to buy a late '08 or an '09. Those years have the redesigned heads with the 12mm spark plugs and not the early 16mm plugs that tend to break off when you try to remove them. The 16mm plugs are a 2-piece design that have a carbon shield that gets caked with carbon, causing the cheap welds on the shield to break and then you have to get a special tool to remove the shields from the heads. Ford will not replace the plugs under warranty, even though they have a TSB out there with the tool number and directions for the techs on how to remove the broken shields. Anyway, just something to look out for. If the sticker on the valve cover has an "AA" code in the numbers, it's the early design heads. "AB" denotes the modified heads.

Spector seems to have forgotten the S197 Shelbys, which are blown from the factory and can handle a lot more than 300 horses. Yeah, they cost more than $25k, but you have a huge down payment to use!

Now I'm reading where the new 2011, due out in 2nd quarter of 2010, V6 will have 300 hp. Is the 6 speed auto available on the V6, as well as GT in 2011? I saw some prices, maybe go with a 2011 V6 convertible, with auto for a little over $30,000.00 and still have 300 hp and a warranty.

the gt500s have great potential just like the 03/04 cobras but you wont find a mint 07 for less than 30-35k

I hear you about that, Spector. Was just saying the Cobras aren't the only blown Ford game in town. No offense to you or your car, BTW. I certainly won't say it's "horrible", yuk-yuk!

This may be my noobness towards GT500's but how many parts are forged?
Aren't the rods forged, but weaker than the cobra's...sort of half-assed.
I suppose the crank would be forged too, or is it cast like the GT's...and what's the compression ratio 8:4:1?

I know the 03/04's have a complete forged rotating assembly...

Re: Best of 2005 to 2009?

Make sure that you thoroughly check out whatever you decide on. I had 4 SN95 cars, 2 Cobras, a 40th Anniversary GT, and a MaCh1. I loved them all. They all had their own unique personalities. My current ride is an S197 `08 GT. It is pretty amazing to me-having owned both chassis' now-what I would consider to be my own pluses and minuses-with each. I still like the independent rear suspension that I had on my Cobras. The factory "sold" the idea of a solid rear axle to the public -when most of us know it was a cost saver on their part. One of the strongest engines(internally) that Ford EVER built-is on the 03-04 Cobras. I don't care for the automatic raising and lowering of the windows on the S197s. My SN95 cars had less wind noise-at speed on the highway. The interior of the S197 is in some ways, more comfortable-for sure there is more headroom. The S197 has a very nice ride-feel to it. It seems like it is funner to drive-and that's probably just because it's the one that I have, now! I really love the retro styling of the S197-it looks more like a 67-68 fastback to me-which I still really dig. I cannot warm up to the change(s) to the rear of the latest platform-particularly the rear bumper/tailight area. The shape of the tailights is dog ugly to me . The factory did do some positive changes to the newest car-and there are several- just that they really could have left the overall shape of the rear end, and the shape of the taillights, similar to either of the two platforms that preceded it!! I have had the best "luck" buying new cars. Yeah, I know that I "take a hit" at the time of purchase-just that I have had a pretty bad experience with second Cobra-and I was the third owner-too long to elaborate.. Good luck. You will love having a Mustang-whatever you decide!
