buyer beware

I'm shopping for a 2008, 2009 or 2010 Mustang GT convertible with automatic. Where GT's used as rental vehicles by Hertz or the warm weather rental companies? I know even in Chicago you could rent a convertible Mustang in the summer, but only the V6. I wonder if there is any indication in the VIN or any way to spot one of those "rental mental" cars. Is there any way to spot a leased GT when they come up for re-sale? Of course, I want a private party, low mile, maintained, slightly used Stang, not a fleet vehicle that was driven like it was stolen.
With the 2011 coming out and expected high demand and premium prices, I'm looking for a reduced price 1 owner.

Re: buyer beware

you can probably track ownership via car fax or something to see who owned it. One thing is the spark plugs on those year GT's are known to break on changing so you make SURE they get changed BEFORE you buy as its 250 a cylinder to repair if they break

Re: buyer beware

My last mustang was a rental car in florida. It's got over 130k hard miles on it and no major issues.

I'd take it on a case by case basis.

Re: buyer beware

The mustang GT-H was the only rental GT mustang and only hertz had them. Now they do have exotic car rental companies that may have had one, but a car fax will tell you everything you need know. So when you buy do as the commercial says and say "show me the car fax."

Re: buyer beware

Car fax gives a complete history of ownership. Well worth the investment.

Re: buyer beware

Most any of the convertible rentals were the V-6 model. I don't know if the VIN will help you out at all, but the carfax is the way to go.

Re: buyer beware

Generally with known rental places like hertz a carfax will suffice. If it was a private seller or smaller rental place, I'd say a carfax might miss things...it only flags repairs reported to the insurance firms.

There are places out there that rent GT's. A friend of mine's dad rented one out in virginia a couple of years ago.

hottcobra is right Hertz only had GT-H models. 90% of Hertz vehicles will be sold through a Dealer only Auction. Most on sale now will be late model 09's early 10's with 40K miles or less and most will be V6 premium. Enterprise, Budget-Avis typically only use V6 base. If you live in Chicago look at Carmax they have clean cars and are pretty honest.

Yah my parents picked up an Impala years ago that was a demo car. It was in excellent shape and they got it for a steal from the dealership.

Also in that case you might be able to find a GT.
