Should be fine depending on miles and wear.

Re: 4.10 gears

Do you have a tuner? If not you will need one for the speedo to be correct & to shift correctly if it is an auto.

Re: 4.10 gears

Yah depending on the mileage I'd look into a rebuild kit as Upton said. Always a good thing to have.

Gear oil is also necessary when installing gears.

Re: 4.10 gears

I would get with your shop and see if they recommend a bearing kit. I had 36k on my 07 when I did 4.10's and didn't use the bearing kit,no whine what so ever and runs like a top with no issues.

DDTCM: what kind of fuel economy have you observed-since the gear(s) install?

Re: 4.10 gears

To be honest......I really don't pay attention to it because I only drive her maybe 2 days out of the week and don't really just cruise her around. So I put in 20 bones worth of 93 and it will last me for 3 weeks sometimes. I have glaced at it on occasion and seen it range from 17 thru 22 on the average. Sorry I couldn't be much help on that.

Re: 4.10 gears

going from 3.31 to 4.10 expect 2 mpg loss on the highway and a gain of maybe 1 mpg or break even in the city. You may lose a bit more on the highway but probably around 2mpg.

Re: 4.10 gears

If they are used gears they may very well whine. If not used gears then the whine is due to an in correct installation. They may say it will go away, Ive never seen it go away. I wouldnt drive it whining if they wish to take a go at it and redo it... once the pattern is worn its to late.

A friend just had some gears put in his GT and it whined (would do it on decel) and he had to buy new gears. I hope the shop you let install them warrantys whine, as its NOT right if it whines with new gears... that means they dont know what they are doing at least to me.... as gears are not just a bolt in and go kind of thing.

A VERY slight whine might be acceptable, especially if you have lower control arms and such that dont have rubber bushings (transfers sound better with stiffer bushings) but any more than a very very faint whine I would do my best to make them take care of it.

Some say Motive gears (now making Ford Racing gears) and Richmond are known to whine due to their make up~ but generally OEM ford racing that are not made by motive are good.

Re: 4.10 gears

Take it back for sure and see what can be done. I would ask them who test drove the car after the install and if they noticed the whine why would they send it out knowing there was a install issue.

Re: 4.10 gears

Yes i was also told by my mechanic that motive gears whine alot. as they wear in they will stop whining. mine whined in the start as well. good luck. i do hope he did the install right. i have a feeling all is well and its just the normal whine of motive.

question- why didnt you go ford racing gears?? i didnt have a choice because i got a v6.

Re: 4.10 gears

you know i really don't know. i just wanted to go with the motives. the gears regardless are badass. loss of gas milage, but you get out of the hole much better and quicker and quicker acceleration

Re: 4.10 gears

Anyone know what the backlash settings would be on a set of 410 to replace my 331? Also will the rear drop enough so that the pinion can be acessed without taking the axel out?

Re: 4.10 gears

The gears can be done with the axle in the car (done it 3 times). DO NOT GET ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE FRPP "A" GEARS, everything else will whine, trust me, I learned the hard way..........................................

The "A" gears are made by FRPP the "B" gears are sold as FRPP but are made my Motive and had issues and that's why Ford does not use them anymore but there are still set of them out there. Yes pinion dept is critical...........

Re: 4.10 gears

Some good info here, and even though there is some talk about loss of mpg, can someone tell me about the effect on the engine? My car is a daily driver, and I heard that putting in 4:10's will wear out my engine faster. Heard that the engine will work harder and the speed of the vehicle will not be as fast on the Hwy, but engine will be racing. I would like to put in the 4:10's though.

Re: 4.10 gears

On my 08 GT I am getting about 15 MPG now. As far as wear and tear the engine realy works less to get up to speed. 2000 at 60MPH. If I had it to do all over again though I would have gone with the 3:73. For the GT I think this would be a better mix. Mine is a daily driver also.

Interesting, I'll take a look into the 3:73. Thanks for the opinion! So how are you liking the gear upgrade?

Re: 4.10 gears

Don't fear the gear. I have 3:73's and a blower which my tuner told me was just right, now I wish I had put the 4:10's in. I guess you can never have too much acceleration . Trust me, after a while you want moaaaaahhhhhhh

hahaha....Thanks, I won't fear the gear then! Let me ask you guys then, since the gears will help you accelarate quicker, will you still have the power to pass someone if you have to while crusing at a moderate 80mph? I think I'll go with the 4:10's. If I'm going to change gears, might as well do it up!
