4.6 swap to a 5.4

Is it possible to swap out a 4.6 to a 5.4 in a 2005 mustang gt auto? Is there anything else that would be needed to be swapped out as well? And would it be expensive? Thanks

Re: 4.6 swap to a 5.4

A friend is just finishing up his v6 to 5.4 swap in a 2005 auto. His will include a KB once the motor is broken in,he is looking to see hp in 600 range. So it can be done but he has done most of the work himself so that saved him a bunch. He also swapped the rear end.

I don't recall him doin any tranny work but he went from a v6 to a 5.4 so he needed the 8.8 rear. You should be fine since you have the rear already.

Re: 4.6 swap to a 5.4

I am not sure you can put that tranny with the engine or not. I have not seen any others do that. The completely different feeling transmission that ford put on with the GT500's are a double ceramic clutch manual transmission that was made to handle a good bit of horsepower, although there have been some problems with these transmissions.

You will probably have to change your driveshaft for the extra horses. Even the GT500 driveshaft should be changed out when you get over the 600rwhp range from what I have heard. At least get a driveshaft safety loop.

For the rear end, the GT500 does use the 8.8, but I think it has a few more items in the rear-end clutch area just as the Mustang Bullet has. The stock GT500 gearing is 331, but a 373 would have been better from the factory.

^^ are you sure it wasn't a 3.55? My Gt came with 3.55's but I swapped them with some 4.10's.

Re: 4.6 swap to a 5.4

As for the rear end gears for the GT500, I should have been more specific. I think the 2007,8,9 all came stock with 3.31 gears. I think the 2010 and up have a different gear 3.55 or 3.73's.
For other Mustangs, ie Mustang GT, my '06 came with 3.55's, but I have seen other size gears that also came stock in some for the same time period.

Re: 4.6 swap to a 5.4

I thought the 06 GT didn't have the 3.55 option?

Re: 4.6 swap to a 5.4

My '06 was a late year model, and that is when I believe they started putting them in some of the cars. I did not order the car, but bought it off a lot at a Ford Dealership in Alabama.
