Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

Well, not too sure about hp gains when comparing h pipes and x pipes on the 3v 4.6L's, but the sound difference is pretty straight forward.

The h-pipe will give you a deeper tone, especially at idle and during acceleration.

The x-pipe will give off a raspy tone when revving and during acceleration.

Both sound good imo on the v8's. The v6's really should stay away from x-pipes.

It's all about the sound. H pipes are a little deeper but the X-pipe can sound deep with the right axleback.

Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

HP gains is a urban legend.....pretty much. But if you don't like that rasp sound and want more of a throaty, deep older sound then go with a H. The prochamber is probably one of THEE BEST sounding IMO.

Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

I say x on a v8. They will give you a slight gain over the h in hp, but not much. If it were a v6 then without question an h. As said above, they are mostly for sound, but they do give slight gains depending on the application.

Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

I didn't buy a X because of sound, I bought it because I wanted the best exhaust flow, cars with valve float is because of exhaust flow and inexperienced people think they can solve the problem by larger diameter piping, for the best exhaust flow get a X, an X can be made to sound as low as any H and with any correctly installed X and with a well tuned motor it will not be "raspy" those that think that there is no difference in performance between the X and H have been mislead.

If I had 2 identical cars.. one with an X and one with an H.. NO ONE could tell the difference from sound. TRUST me on that. Either work fine. I have an X.

What X pipe do you have? If it's one the welds in or clamps to the stock cats, then it will not sound that much different than the stock catted H.

Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

If you are that worried about a gain of 2/4 hp then go with a x pipe. There will be someone out there that can out shift 2/4 hp that's why I see it as a no hp gain for a midpipe.

All preference. As mentioned horse power is negligible. H=deeper more old school muscle car sound, X= slight "rasp" under heavy acceleration. I had and X and just switched to an H. I personally like Kooks LT headers and H pipe but as I said, it's all preference.

What. 2 hp. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference in the 2. Sound is the real variable. A good o/r h or o/r x will perform about the same. H has a lil better low end torque. X has a bit better top end hp but in no way would the butt dyno be able to notice the difference. H pipe is muscle

Well they honest truth is find what sounds best to you. The power differences are negligeable. Buy what sounds best and don't go too loud. Gets old quick. Jmo

Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

This is not new stuff , Bottom line is H-pipe is for Drag Racing, X-pipe for road racing. That is how they were developed back in the 60's. It was about balancing the exhaust for better torque, and even back pressure. They made a big difference with Carb motors back then along with extend collector pipes

Ok, but does that still apply to the 2005+ models where there is no carb and cars have had 30-40 years to evolve?

Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

Basics still apply, but not everything can be measured! It can be heard. And it is your choice. I went with x-pipe. 80% street, 10% road race, 10% drag, thats my use. My street driving is mostly highway and it runs great and fuel mileage is also great, even with all the mods. If i were 40% drag i would have used the H-pipe, If you like the lopie cam sound use h-pipe. The more mods you install the more you will hear.

Cars can put out the same HP, setup is the key to usage.

Well, thanks for the breakdown. I've been looking and wondering what is best for a good deep rumble at idle and during acceleration, and now I see it's the H-pipe that I'm looking for! Thanks Sonicpony!!!

Do those make the car any louder? And did you feel any gains from it?

Re: Which is better X pipe or H pipe exhaust

I might have got a little more power, but how can you feel 5 horsepower? And the Ford Racing mufflers that I have aren't very loud, so the X pipe didn't make it any louder, that I could tell.

One thing I can tell you, and this may sound weird, but I have had several women ask me what exhaust I run on the 05 GT because they love the way it sounds; the last time was on Sunday... . It does have a nice sound, but it certainly isn't loud. I think my 05 Mustang has the same tune and exhaust that you find on a Shelby Mustang GT.
