4.10 Gears

I'm looking to put 4.10 gears in my 05 GT but I don't want to kill my fuel economy too much... How big of a difference is there from 3.73s to 4.10s? I want the best performance out of it and if the 4.10s aren't too bad with fuel economy, then that's what I'll get, but what type of EPA numbers should I expect from the 4.10s?

Re: 4.10 Gears

going from your stock 3.31's (I assume) to 4.10s will probably make you gain about 1.X mpg in the city and take away from you 2.x on the highway (maybe 3).

Gearing depends on what you want to do with the car as well as the transmission gearing as that plays a factor in how the final drive gear will end up.

If you want to do quarter mile runs you use different gearing than 8th mile for example.

Most find 3.73 are a good in between. You get good performance (probably 2.5 tenths quicker times) and dont give up quite as much rpm. The 4.10s are not much higher rpm wise overall though (can do the math if you want to see)

Keep in mind if you have an exhaust drone at like 2250-2350 etc rpm you may be around that at 70mph in 5th with higher gears

i have 4.10's in my 03 Mach 1 , and I took it to florida last year from Jersey , i mostly cruised around 80 mph ,and averaged 23.++ mpg , i dont think i ever got that good with the stock 3.55's

Re: 4.10 Gears

They say go with 4.10 if it is auto but I would stick with 3.73 if you aren't going to drag it a bunch. You'll save some on 3.73 but It will still be fun to play with.

Mine is a manual, so I guess that means I should go with the 3:73s... Will my top speed still suffer from them like they would with 4:10s?? I drive on the highway quite a bit, so I don't want to risk that.

Yes but not as badly of course, I have a v6 manual and went to 3.73 with t-loc and it did damage my mileage a little but it was well worth it, if youre going from 4.1 to 3.73 then your top speed will increase a little bit...I drive the highway 4 times a week, it's about an hour trip and i didn't notice any difference with the top speed, how often do you hit 120 on the highway?

I hit 120 on the highway probably daily. Baton Rouge drivers are terrible. lol
I had 4.10s on my v6 auto and it tore my gas mileage up. What actually might have been the problem was the fuel/air ratio on my tune from Stang-Hi. At least I always guessed that is what it was. 4.10s were awesome... but I'd take it all back b/c I spent so much money on gas.
I am the exception to the rule of 4.10s

And you would probably be happy with the 3.73... And ya, get it retuned, that should help you out a bit

I went from 3.55 to 4.10 with no milage change. Added a set of hotrods, and gained a solid 2 mpg highway.

Re: 4.10 Gears

Ive always had 4.10s but now have 3.73 in my 2011.I am seriously thinking of doing 4.10 because they are so much fun on a street car and the whole mileage deal is over rated. 4.10s are usually frowned upon by non 4.10 owners so I would listen to the guys who have them or have had them.

I went with 3.90s and my milage loss was negligeable on highway and city mileage went up...the 4.6 motors want to rev and a gear change gets you into the powerband quicker. I tried my friends 02 with 4.10s and it was alot of shifting with a useless 1st gear however the 3.90s seem to pull just as well...if you are worried about top speed 4.10s spin at 6000 rpm at 170 mph...3.90s are 180 at 6000 rpm...so I dunno how much 170 mph driving you plan on doing but I wouldn't worry about the top speed. You run out of hp long before you get there

So, should I go for 3:90s?? How much of a difference is it from stock? Is it better than 4:10s or 3:73s??

Well 3.73s may disappoint you but 3.90s or 4.10s will turn your car into a different animal...if it's an auto 4.10s for sure

What's the difference between 3:90 and 4:10? Sorry for all the questions... I just love my car and want to make sure I make the right choices. I have a manual and I heard that with 4:10s, 1st gear sucks...

The difference is about 400 rpm at 70 mph...a little better mileage. And 1st gear does suck but with sticky tires pulls like a freight train

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I'm going to go with 3.90s because they seem like a good compromise. I would get 4.10s but i hate the idea of my car doggin' it in 5th gear on the highway... I heard it feels like the car is working hard while it's at or above 70 mph...

Just put 4.10s on my auto gt. Mpg went down about two. Rpms on highway are crazy and not very much power from 60+

What year mustang do you have. 3000 rpm is just hitting the powerband. With my gears 5th gear became useful and not a dog gear

2009. I barely beat a gt yesterday on the highway (started at 60) and I beat a 2010 vette by a car today from 15-100

Seriously, if any one of us were that concerned about gas mileage, I don't think we'd be driving the cars we do, or the way we do just my two cents I wouldn't worry about gas, the point is power and FUN

That sounds like a even race with the GT or a driver error.Lets be realistic here....I doubt that vette was racing because with your mods he would have smoked you easy.Your mods are barely pushing 300whp and you totally out weigh a vette with 400hp.

I have 301rwhp. The vette was auto, inexperienced driver, stock
