My friend has an '05 GT that is taken care of very well and I thought she said something that it was common to bubble. Pisses her off because her car is rarely driven.

Re: Factory paint bubbling up ?

it can happen if prep work is not perfect, take it to ford and see what they say... they probably will give you the run around but you never know.

I know on 03/04 cobras some had issues with paint coming off on the hood as it wasnt preped at all before painted.

The hood on your car I think is metal right? If so it could be rust or some other chemical reaction.

Re: Factory paint bubbling up ?

I have an 06 had problem in 08 had it painted by local ford dealer, noticed again in 09 took it back they repainted, noticed again in 7 months had it repainted after arguing that they cant paint alluminum, it is now 6 months since the 3rd repaint is starting again, rather than bother my local ford dealer because the problem stems from the factory not preping the hood properly in the first place wrote a letter to dearborn letting them know that I have this problem and it will keep reoccuring can't be fixed because the contamination lies withing the folds of the hood skin on the hood frame, no matter how many times it is stripped the oxidation will return because you can't get to the problem. I asked them for a solution either send a new hood to my dealer or compensate me on the pruchase of a new hood, now my dealer has already eaten three paint jobs, Dearborn replied sorry for your luck. Now I haven't figured what to do but I guess I will have to eat this one myself.

Re: Factory paint bubbling up ?

Is the problem just above where the radiator is ? Could it be from heat on the underside of the hood. Also, is the hood heat blanket still on the hood ? Lastly, could some kind of chemical have been on the area that is bubbling ?

I have heard of some paint issues on hoods where the hood heat blanket has been taken off and excess heat caused problems, but have never seen that in person.

Some alluminum can actually get corrosion (just ask the gt500 owners with corrosion spots on the exterrior of their "alluminum" intakes and heads. This is easily stopped with treatment on bare alluminum, but would not work on painted surfaces.

I also have a spot on one of my shock towers where it looks like a little trash got in the factory paint or spot it was painting.

Re: Factory paint bubbling up ?

Its a known problem to ford the factory has admitted the problem exists but pawn it off on to the dealerships to deal with most will say you are out of warranty. The problem is impurities trapped within the pinch weld or fold where the hood skin is wrapped over the bottom rigid part of the hood, it will start to oxidise and travel upward to the topside of the hood once it starts it will progress more rapidly as the surface area is increased to the oxygen. This problem exists with alot of 05+ mustangs and also F150's

Re: Factory paint bubbling up ?

My dealer paint shop does not want to see me walk through the door but hey I tell them don't your people know how to paint? My brother inlaw a automotive paint supplier thinks he knows how to stop the problem but I tell him the only way to stop the problem is get rid of the alluminum hood, or have it treated and painted properly the first time.

My 06 had the same issue. I detailed it everyday to make sure it didn't get worse and luckily I slayed a bambi with it to get it fixed. And FYI our hoods are steel not aluminum because I hit the deer so hard that it bent in the crown in the front. I figured it would be replaced but they were able to fix it. Actually fixed it twice because the repair cracked and I wasn't accepting that.

Here's what the Mustang looked like just after I hit the deer. Just happened to happen as I was going to work on Easter Sunday. $4,000 total to fix.

Re: Factory paint bubbling up ?

Yeah tell me about it. It really wasn't that bad other than they had to replace the rt fender, rt headlight, ac condenser, grille, and front bumper. Of course they pretty much painted the entire right side of the car short of the quarter panel. I crapped my pants when I found out that to replace the fender was $375!!! My fenders on my Camaro were around 125, so I had a case of sticker shock.
